Title: I miss RAT
Post by: ducatiz on August 11, 2013, 07:22:59 PM
I'm not the only one that chatted with Gerry offline.  He was a great cyber mentor, maybe even a friend.

I don't have anything else to say except I'm raising a glass to him tonight.

File this where you see fit.

I miss him too.

I drank my bottle of Bushmills in his honor (<< spelled without a "u" in his honour).

And will drink another on the same day next year...............

Cheers RAT  [beer]

I was warming up to Rat, he was a good writer. But it's not as big a loss for me personally as others that were closer and have gone too. Still, I hate Death.

Yes, Rat was indeed a "good writer" (among many other characteristics that you likely weren't lucky enough to discover). I can only imagine the clever, ingenious response he would have to your...comment.

I believe RAT himself had come to terms with his own mortality.  Not cool with it by any means, certainly not resigned to it either.  He was planning it kick it's hairy ass!!

But RAT's best laid plans went astray.  As oft plans do.....

And by make the beast with two backs, I'd really like to read RAT's tale of that story.

It'd be the most humourous and darkly witty account of human demise you would ever get to read.

I like to think he's writing it somewhere.

My assumption is that existence continues in some form and has to be at least as absurd as what we're dealing with now. I also assume there to be a twist to it that depresses most but gave him a great laugh upon realizing what it is. Just my dark take.

In all correctedness, I lifted Svedka rather than a beer.  I think that's ok.

Pretty certain it wouldn't matter to him what's in your glass:  water (although he'd have dosed out a catchy, snarky spot-on remark for that), natty light (remark worse than water), beer, tequila, vodka, ice wine, Bushmills, foo foo latte, Silver Oak, juiced Ikea swedish meatballs, whatever.... He'd be ok with it.   ;)

I had been trying to get Rat to check this joint out. (http://www.themeatballshop.com/ (http://www.themeatballshop.com/)) to know if I should make the trip. He wasn't able, so I guess I'm gonna take a train ride up and have some for him.

I also miss Rat.

He was a link, a witness, a documentation of the old NYC I knew and grew up with.  Very few people are left that would believe I saw my first and only seven foot tall, dark skin, wearing only underwear on a 5 degree night with a wind-chill of -15 degree, Amazonian hooker on 46th Street, only 100 yards away from what is now the Disney Store.

The disgust associated with having to ride a subway car on a hot day.

Walking into a restaurant in Chinatown, hearing the person behind the counter speak fluent English and completely forget how to speak English when you approach to order.

Mimes.

A bar in NYS was a place you can get a few drinks, interact with others if you felt like it, not a place that's original intent is to be a tribute to a flash-in-the-pan wrestler, that serves alcohol and reheated food with large flat screen TVs as wallpaper.

Be the oddball that thinks arguing with a monkey at the Central park Zoo is unusual behavior but entertaining.

I have pix of that hooker somewhere.

The bell labs office I was working out of was on 49th st at broadway well before the conde nast building replaced all the porn shops and the $5 steakhouse.

the new york that i remember and cherish in a way is the same one you can see in the background in Midnight Cowboy.

Seeing Gerry amidst all that seems perfectly natural.

smoking a cig at a diner.

Yup, miss him....

I was born in 1980, so I caught the tail end glimpse of old good NYC...

now, how its possible I don't know, its a shit hole of pleasantries and do holder hippies...

How can a place be safer yet get worse...  society here has forgotten old NY with its greaser monkey haters...  now they're on fixies and chatting in Starbucks....

I could sit in front of rat for a week and just listen to him talk...

Hope his family is hanging in...
