it's just "a bolt" they said... "plug n ride" they said... >:(
MY ASS
almost lost my arm today while doing the GT 1000 spoked wheel mod, after 2 hours I got the front axle of the 2002 through the forks and wheel, BUT that wheel does not like my front axle and spacer at the end of it ( left side remember? ) well my question would be do I need the front axle of the gt 1000 too? Do I just need the inner wheel spacer from my old brembo to be inside the new wheel? OR what daaaaa ffffff"·$ am I missing? Axle won't enter full, just like half inch or less is out, BUT right side of the wheel, I have snow flakes rotors, are side to side and wheel won't turn a s_"$t soooo please helppp!!!!!! [bang]
slow down.
take a breath.
take some photos and some measurements.
you may have to work some spacer issues.
and maybe change the axle
but first take a moment, align the old wheel up and double check everything is correct.
then swap the new one in and take picture.
measure the two wheels off the bike and right down any differences in width.
double check the brake rotor offset as well. (measure rotor to rotor distance on both wheels)
[bow_down] thank you will do, as soon as my whole body stop hurting, really, man how could be a monster sooo heavy, the part me almost loosing an arm.. well I put the bike on stands and suddenly baby start going on her right side and what was more important? rizomas or arm, well simple question, simple answer, my wholeeeee baby! ;D
also, how are you holding up the front end of the bike that it fell over?
:-[ 2 heavy duty jack stands... how could i do it better? thank you for all the advice! really! [bow_down]
get a rear stand, and a front stand (under the triple is better)
or get a rear stand and hang the front from a beam or ladder.
either way, you need the bike completely stable before you go torquing on that front.
also make sure you have a tq wrench for putting it back together.
thank you! will throw it on 3 used tires as I did the first time I tear it apart and from there will remove both forks and work on it... I was looking at one pic of a gt 1000 sport classic front axle... it has 2 spacers one for the right one for the left, so... as far as my logic concerns I have 2 scenarios:
1. I buy that axle with spacers and plug and play....
2. I dismantle both bearing and inner spacers from brembo and spoke wheel, exchange them, put new bearings in the process and that-s it for me to use the current axle and left spacer
any last thoughts? [popcorn]
Oh yes how do I dismantle the bearings + spacer at the tire... just before messing things up [popcorn]
The bearings have to be driven out. Chances are you'll damage them trying it.
hello Ducpainter, yes of course, but the main question is: which scenario would be best, not less expensive, I mean:
Exchange of inner wheel spacer with current 3 spoke brembo, or do I buy the whole gt 1000 axe with the left and right side spacers?
Thank youuu!!
what? why change the bearings?
both are 25mm axles right?
you just need spacers the correct width.
the sport classic axles and spacers might make it all easier.
have you measured and taken photos?
don't get ahead of yourself again.
hi Raux, no I mean the inner wheel spacer, you know left bearing, spacer, right bearing... that bearing I mean... I know 100% sure that one is smaller on the brembo, I mean shorter, than the one that has the spoke wheel
I'm confused.
Bearings have an ID, an OD, and a thickness.
the wheel... leave it alone.
you need to work only on axle/spacer combo
axle - fork - spacer - wheel - spacer - fork - nut
those are the only things to worry about right now.
GT 1000 axle combo would be then! I'll buy it now and tell you about it in a few days, well when it gets home... [thumbsup] meanwhile back to my old wheel :'(
not what i said.
please post pics and measurments
At simple sight you can measure that the last portion of the axle that is not in, is the same used by the wheel to "space" it so the rotor and brake can work...

left side....

here you can see, if you compare the piece that is not in, with the thread of the axle, that is the problem, so I will take the spacer to a machinist an order a spacer - that portion left out + 0.01mm

is that the right course of action or do I buy the GT 1000 axle with spacers?
this is a pic from the spacers, GT 1000, as you can see they are 2, right and left side...

My simple head tells me, buy the whole axle with spacers... BUT the forks on the GT 1000 are adjustables, newer models etc, my forks are pre-adjusted ( fixed so to say ) ones, so I am not sure about the space between both lower forks at the axle hole... [coffee]
IIRC, also, not to through a wrench into things, but you also need to check the brake calipers mounted to ensure they do not hit the spokes.
easiest way to do that now would be not to put the axle all the way in so you can have some movement on the wheel sideways. put the calipers on and make sure it all looks good.
you can tighten the pinch bolts and SLOWLY roll the bike forward to see if there's interference.
If all lines up
buy the axle and spacers and nut
you may have to machine the spacers, the most important alignments will be with your calipers/rotors and of course in line with your rear wheel.
^^^
Looks like you have the goldline "big" brakes. They're gonna interfere with the spokes. [thumbsdown]
yeap, I guess another set of spacers for the rotors too, that way I will have more space between the brakes and the spokes
You may have to machine the calipers so they do not hit the spokes. There's a thread somewhere on here or ducati.ms about how to do it.
Since I have space between the wheel and the snow flackes I was planning on machining a set of spacers [drink]
then you'll have to space out your calipers as well
well after almost losing my arm yesterday a friend point me a "pro" service kind of "solution" [wine]

hang it from the roof + jack stands... could work freely, no sweat, no collateral damage, just work [beer]
returning to the measurement stuff:
Axle Monster 620ie 2002: Total length 250mm: left spacer: 30mm right spacer: 67mm Brembo total inner length left bearing+center spacer+right bearing: 110mm
So far from GT 1000: Spoke wheel total inner length left bearing+center spacer+right bearing: 118mm
Conclusion, today I bought the GT 1000 Axle, so my only concern right now would be either go back to use only 1 rotor, left of course, or buy both GT 1000 rotors + brakes [coffee]
update:
- GT 1000 Axle bought and it's on it's way
- currently bidding on GT 1000 like new calipers + front line
- waiting for rotors, another 320mm, this time round, not snow flakes anymore
