My ultimate fear. Literally has stopped me from riding. I've only put on about 100 miles this year.

I've been using deer whistles for years and can actually see them head the other direction.

It wasn't full grown, probably an adolescent.  I was going about 45-55mph when it jumped out in front of me like a kamikaze.  There was just enough time for me to realize what was about to happen and I did my best not to panic.  Didn't hit the brakes and just focused on keeping the bike upright.

The deer bounced off my front fender and got tangled up in my rear tire. Pucker moment for sure.  Didn't kill it but ripped off one of its rear legs off.  Called 911 since it was still alive and a Sheriff showed up with an AR-15.

Wow!  Glad you are ok.  Do you hit it or did you just piss it off?  Never seen a bike look so good after a deer hit....  ;D

Thanks man.  I'm super grateful that it wasn't worse.

Can you shoot me a link to the one you use?  Really considering getting something like this now.

That was close. Glad you're ok. I'm amazed you kept it upright.
Similar to our problem with kangaroos down here.
Is it also a dusk and dawn issue up there?

The deer population has got out of control in our local forests to the point of causing environmental damage. The impact of the introduced species is such, that authorities have relaxed hunting regulations.

Yeah on a much more positive note, it was wonderful to get out with a friend.  We met for lunch and cruised some back county roads.  This is obviously a before pic :)

That is what I am afraid of now.  I can see how it could have easily gone so much worse.  Not much you can do when a 300 lb. ballistic strikes you on head on.

Yeah, it gets much worst at dusk.  Its like the walking dead or something.  This happened in broad daylight though.

That would be an abnormally LARGE deer, unless you've got mule deer where you're at.

Ha maybe you are right.  I just googled what the average weight was of a deer, and the all mighty interwebz said 300 was average for a male deer.

20 years ago on Nine Mile (Upper Tujunga) off of Angeles Crest in SoCal I got my lucky card punched by a deer.  85mph right hand sweeper, Knee on the ground at 1:30 in the afternoon on a 100 degree day.  I just saw the bouncing brown blob our of the corner of my eye but could do nothing but hold my line.  The deer landed with his back feet just clearing my tank.  I broke his back leg with my helmet.  Other than nearly taking my head off it did not upset the bike at all.  I pulled over to the side of the road, put the side stand down and tried to stand up.  It did not work, for the first time in my life I was shaking too hard to stand.....

As a balloon pilot I think every time I fly that it would be a better world without power lines.  As a Motorcyclist every time I ride I think what a better world it would be without deer.

The reality of motorcycles is there are multiple random factors that we should be aware of and accept.  After all, if it was not a little bit dangerous, would it be any fun?

Yet we can't buy kangaroo skin in NY or Ca  ???

Dusk and dawn in rural areas, anytime in built up areas.

And yes, dusk and dawn are the worst times of the day. Harvest season here in MN ratchets it up a few notches. Since my accident (at dusk, mid-September), my mantra is once the combines hit the fields I don't ride again until everything is out of the fields.

Glad you're okay!  At least in AK the deer don't really jump out in the road so much (relatively speaking).  Seems like their defense most of the time is to freeze by the side of the road.  Seen about 10 so far this summer do the same thing while I was riding.

New Jersey banned deer and bear hunting about 10 years ago, and within 2 years the deaths on the highways from deer strikes were up 300% and people were meeting bears as they took out their trash, so they put it back in place.

Congratulations you weren't hurt. As stated, you were very lucky. I hit one a few years ago. Coming around a sweeping right hander and came upon three does crossing from left to right. I backed off and moved to the left lane from 70 mph. As I came upon them, the last about faced into me. I was on my Road King and I hit her in the shoulder with my knee and crash bar. She turned my right passing and fog light. It joselled the bike, but I kept her up. Pulled over and checked out the bike. Straightened the lights and headed back on my way to work. Not many can say they hit a deer and survived unscathed.
I often wondered about the deer whistles. Someone told me to ask a used car dealer concerning their effectiveness. It didn't sound like they were very effective. I could be wrong.

I've hit and killed three deer in a car but only come close to hitting one on the bike.

BTW if you ripped its leg off that's a kill.

300lb doe? Good Lord! That's like mutant sized.
I'm not buying that whole dawn/dusk scenario. I was taken out about lunch time (noon), I was the middle of three bikes (40mph), she came out of the woods on the side of the road like she was shot out of a cannon and hit me in my front, left turn signal. At impact, her body turned the length of the bike and knocked me off. There were some of her organs lying in the road that I have to assume came out her ass as there were no visible open wounds. I ended up with some separated ribs (painful) and a little shocky.
Deer are dumb about vehicles, I've seen one run across an open field towards the road and a line of traveling cars, run into the rear quarter of a car, bounce off and run back across the field the same direction from which she came.
When I see them standing by the side of the road I slow down and head in their direction to get them to move before I reach them instead of as I get there and they try to shoot in front of you.

Glad you are okay.  [thumbsup]

We have a zillion deer out here.  It's more unusual to *not* see at least one on my way to and from work.  They're in the fields or on the shoulder of the road almost every time I drive that road.  I have to slow, stop, or otherwise maneuver around them (in the road) at least once a week.

For me on the bike, this just means absolutely no 9/10's or 10/10's riding.  No knees down in the corners.  I gotta have enough room to slow, stop, or otherwise go around who-knows-what in the middle of the road.  Came around one of the tighter bends 2 weeks ago on the bike, 3 does crossing a tight left-hand bend.  One was on the left shoulder, the other two were in my lane, toward the right shoulder.  I slowed... the two on the right continued off the road.  The one on the left was clearly scared sh!tless by the sound of my bike (exacerbated by my throttle-blip downshift as I slowed)... it cowered down next to the guardrail on the left as I passed.  I love my Remus Ti pipes. [evil]

I haven't bothered with deer whistles on the bike, because they obviously react to the sound of the pipes... they tend to get outta the way in a hurry when I come rolling through.

The much quieter Subaru, OTOH, I probably need to put deer whistles on.  Had a number of close calls in that car... including one young'n that jumped into the front corner and bounced off.

I'm not buying that whole dawn/dusk scenario.

Well, they can surprise you ANY time of day....saw one bolt across the road the other day on the way home at 3:00 in the afternoon, broad daylight.

Around here, dusk and dawn are extra dicey.

Yeah, perhaps I didn't word that quite right. I definitely agree that they are most active at dawn and dusk but you have to have your guard up at any time of day or night for all types o' critters. I killed a bird with my shin yesterday.

Yeah.  Deer can be out at any time of day.  But midday, it's usually only 1 or 2.  Around sunset?  Can be upwards of a dozen (2-3 small herds).

Title: someone hit a deer in 2012...
Post by: Doe-Foe on August 22, 2013, 09:20:22 AM
Several people at my workplace knew (or knew of) this guy.
Because there was a witness, more details than usual were told.
This is from the summer of 2012.
I rode this road 5 minutes before I hit my deer in 2011.

(http://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag125/training-with2wheels/Motorcycles/Motorcycle_crash_on_Camp_Evelyn_July_19_2012-Copy_zps7ec690c1.jpg) (http://s1302.photobucket.com/user/training-with2wheels/media/Motorcycles/Motorcycle_crash_on_Camp_Evelyn_July_19_2012-Copy_zps7ec690c1.jpg.html)

Amazing thing is, several people said this guy had hit deer 3 or 4 times before. But he never wore a helmet so eventually the odds got him. And it was a Harley.

"the odds got him"

That's the one thing that scares me with riding Centerville Highway on a regular basis.  Deer almost every day.  There were 7 out last night (two groups in different areas... mama + 2 fawns, then a herd of 4 adults).  Had to slow for the second group, as one of them was crossing the road.

Also had to come nearly to a stop in the morning for a flock of turkey crossing the road.  Stupid birds get hit on Centerville Hwy all the time.  [bang]  I haven't hit one yet, but we've only lived out here for a year.

I wear full gear, but you all know as well as I do that can only protect you from certain injuries... sometimes the sh*t hits the fan blades just so, and it makes a *major* mess.

I dunno... could be paranoid and just commute in the truck all the time.  Deer or turkey won't matter... if it steps out in front of that truck, it's gonna be roadkill, and I will continue home safely.  But, life is short.  I maintain that it doesn't matter if you're riding a motorcycle, driving a Volvo, or ensconced in an M1 Abrams... when your time is up, it's up.  Might as well enjoy the ride.

One big bugsplat or rock to the face and you would think people would want to wear helmets. My visor is covered with bugs right now and it seems like the biggest one is always right between the eyes. I'm sure it doesn't just happen to me either. I just don't get it.
Besides motorcycle helmets look cool and not make you look like a dork.
