Title: Gauges not working
Post by: astonius on August 24, 2013, 12:07:46 PM
I have a 2002 Monster 750.  The gauge cluster has had issues ever since I bought it.  The speedo and tach do not move.  They don't even sweep on startup.  The low fuel indicator also seems to be finicky, sometimes reading fine while other times giving a false warning.  The high beam indicator, blinker, and neutral indicators all seem to work fine.  I've checked the wiring harness, which seems to be ok (no obvious corrosion).  I even took the gauge pod apart and tried reflowing the solder hoping it might help to no avail.  Any ideas on how I might fix this, or do I have to replace the pod?

I have no clue why they aren't working. Sorry.

Being an '02, unless you have the red key, you'll need to have the immobilizer disabled in order to replace the gauges.

I actually do have the red key, and the previous owner installed a Veypor digital cluster, but I would much rather have the stock gauges working again.

AFAIK, you have two options.

Buy a *virgin* gauge assembly.

or

Get your ECU re-flashed with an immobilizer-delete, then buy any used gauge assembly.

I think I may have found a solution, but I wanted to get some clarification on some things first.  I found a pod on eBay for a 2005 S4R that is brand new, which I'm guessing means "virgin".  I'll be sure to confirm with seller this wasn't pulled off an existing bike.  It looks almost identical to the stock '02 750, all cosmetic changes.  The wiring harness looks the same.  I checked the manuals for both bikes, and the ECU wiring is identical (ignoring a few extras on the S4R for cooling).  Would this work?  If so, would I be able to setup the immobilizer with the new pod if it is in fact virgin?  Would a dealer have to do anything, or can I do everything myself since I have the red key?  Lastly, is the odometer tied to the gauges or to the ECU?  If gauges, how would I reset the odometer to my bike's mileage?

If the cluster is from a bike that never had the ecu and gauges 'married' by using the red key it should be fine. I'm pretty sure that is the definition of virgin for this purpose, and is what activates the immobilizer function.

Mileage is tied to the gauges and by Federal law cannot be reset.
