Title: Any 911 owners here?
Post by: Airborne on August 30, 2013, 01:04:03 PM
I am looking to replace my Audi A4 perhaps with a 2005+ 911. I would really like to go for a carerra 4, as I like the flared fenders and tend to have always owned "quattro" cars. Im finding 911 4s with 60-70k miles for around $40K.

I bought my last A4 with 60k miles on it and added another 100k with no major problems, just regular maintence. Hands down the most reliable car I've ever owned. Would I be asking for trouble with a 911 4 with this many miles on it?

Last time I drove a 911, I was 18... my friend and I took his dad's 1996 993 for an hour long joyride  [leo]. I think the commercial goes something like "theres the time when you first see one, the time when you first want one and the decade or so in between until when you own one"

I'd pm Porsche Monkey and ask him.

I'd quiz my insurance agent too.

The insurance wasnt actually too bad of a kick in the balls. Im looking at $300-400 more/ year compared to what I pay now. Helps to have a squeeky clean record.

I found the same when I queried.  Porsches aren't as bad on the insurance as you'd think... at least if you have a clean record.

Can't help ya with the reliability/longevity question, sadly.  I'd be interested to hear the answer, though.  The 911 is reputed to be the "everyday supercar".

This.

He might know a little bit about maintenance.

I had no problems at all with my 2000 C2.

Insurance is really isn't that bad, especially as car #2.

They do have an insatiable hunger for tires.  [evil]

^^ Egg-smackly.

And that's not the only time Top Gear has referred to the 911 as a useable supercar.

Then there's a friend of mine who is a 911 aficionado, and so of course he swears by them as the best all-around functional AND fun car.

Which is part of what makes me curious about their day-to-day reliability.  If they ever pave the road in front of my house, I've told wifey the day they finish is the day we get a European sports coupe or sport sedan.  Audi, BMW, Porsche... a nice used 911 is high up on that list.

I've had my 996 for 10 years and nothing major has happened. They are notorious of having rear main seal issues. Mine was replace 3 times under warranty. Since the warranty has ended I've changed the water pump and that's about it. Great car that I drive every day. Now has almost 90 K miles on the clock. It's about time to trade up so I'm on the list for  a '14 Gt3. As far as insurance goes if you have a good record it's not bad unless its a GT3 because its a 2 seater. I will never own a different car. Period!

An air cooled whale tale is on my short list of cars to buy when the time/money allows. As far as reliebility goes, porsche is constantly ranked as one of the more reliable brands (http://autos.yahoo.com/blogs/motoramic/lexus-porsche-tops-j-d-power-reliability-rankings-192544256.html).
