I just had a few questions in regards to my s2r1000 motor. It only has 14k on it. My bike got kicked over in July and has been smoking and burning oil since.
The horizontal cylinder is the one burning oil. The plugs on the vert look good, but the horizontal were covered in oil.
What do you think would be the most probable thing going on?
One of my thoughts was maybe oil pooled above the piston while it sat and blew the HG. But I'm not sure if you would have an idea if it was more likely to be valve seals, rings, etc?
My best guess would be intake valve guide/seal, though this would not be due to the tip over. Maximum clearance on the guide is .08mm. Easiest way to check is with a dial indicator. With rocker arm moved aside, set up indicator in the same direction as the rocker arm. Wiggle back and forth in the same direction. More than 1.6mm.? Replace guide and seal. Check both vertical and horizontal. If the oil consumption/smoke problem is not too bad you can wait until it is time for your next valve check.
(No expert). You probably did this after the tip over. Did you replace the plugs and check all the ignition wiring of the offending cylinder? Also check all the connections and wires to the injector.
I was thinking if the symptoms were because of the tip over.
Maybe you didnt have the bike long before the tip over and wouldnt have noticed the symptoms at first? What Howie described is not unkown for this style motor, but fixable. Over here in Australia the S2R 1000 commands a high price as a desired model, even up against the S4Rs.
Let us know how you go:).

Going to pull off the horizontal head next week and see what there is to see. I've had it a little over a year before it got kicked over.

I'm pretty sure you'll need a head gasket for that 1K to put it back together.
My motor was the same way. though it was defintely not casue it got knocked over (and believe me, it got knocked over more times than i can count and it got litterally backed up ONto by an F150).
THe paint on the heads arent really good so it adds to the fact that none of hte grime will ever come off. and mine had oil leaking out of the covers even though all the gasket and rings were brand and newly replaced (not cheap either for some of those o rings).
if the plug is covered in oil, likely what howie said. Mine was moving quiet a bit and the plug was always a bit wet. i think i put on almost 5,000 miles like that and then it got replaced under warranty.
As DP said, you need gaskets for the heads on the DS1000, last i checked they run $100 each.
How's it going? You doing the work, or a shop?
Depending on what you find, if you love the bike and will keep it long term, I would consider both heads getting a freshen up. New guides, seals and a nice valve job, maybe some mild porting.
It might also be nice to indulge in some bike makeover parts you have had in mind while the bike is down.
Cheers.
You can check valve to guide clearance without removing the head...
Saw you got some pistons. Nice. Hi comp or big bore as well?
What did you find?
I've head the valve guides are iffy anyway. If it's not too bad I'd leave it for now. Anything in the oil screens? Flakes?
Just update-
I pulled the motor apart and figured out the problem. As the bike had sat on it's side thanks to a certain douche ex, the oil pooled above the horizontal piston, leaving a slick spot on the cylinder wall.. As it continued to run, the slick spot started wearing down the rings, leaving a low compression and reason to burn oil.
Compression was 200 on the vertical and 120-140 range for the horizontal.
FBF high compression pistons are on the way for a fix [evil]
