Title: Dilemma
Post by: Kevin848 on July 08, 2008, 04:54:02 AM
02 748 For track day purposes only
or
General purpose riding on a Monster (specific model TBD) ???

Since you already have a SBK--track plastics needed?--I'd go for the Monster as the second bike...my $0.02.  [moto]

...not a bad dilemma, though.  ;)

True... but the idea of tossing the the 848, race plastic or otherwise, doesnt sit well with me. But your idea means I can have both ;D ... I like it!

If you bought the 748, you'd have two water-cooled 8 valve bikes, right?

Cha-ching maintenance-wise, and a limited riding season to boot because of the excessive under-seat heat those bikes generate  :o

Now if you could find a good air-cooled 4 valve Monster (M1000), you'd have pretty much year round riding capability for less money when it comes time to service the bike.

Get maybe an older one with Ohlins suspension and high mount exhuast.  Then add some rear sets to pull the pegs up a bit and voila, competent track bike that you're less afraid of throwing down the road as opposed to a full-up SBK.

My first-cup-o-coffee-.02...

Nice dilemma though  [thumbsup]

848 on the street is pure adrenalin induced frenzy all while looking sexy as hell. Not to sure about tracking it, was initially going to until I came across the 748.

How serious are you about track riding? 1 or 2 days/year, or 10 - 12 days/year?

I know several people afraid to really ride their shiny new SBKs on the track for fear of dropping their new bling-bling.

Pretty serious, to the point I would almost sale off all of my guns to pay for it... I cant believe I just said that. As for how may times a year, hard to say but certainly more than 1 or 2.

You'll outgrow tracking a Monster very quickly (ask Jester).

Are you comfortable tracking your 848?

Quite right.  Include me in.  Although "dropping" their shiny SBKs is just the half of it; it's the tumble there towards the end that'll kinda put the hitch in your giddyup.  At least for me anyway    ;D

Guess I'll just have to man-up a bit before now and the next track day  [laugh]

At least with the Monster it's easier to ride in town (it's not the dedicated track weapon the SBKs are).  Not that we're a social bunch who flash-mob and get together at the drop of a hat or anything...

After tracking my 848 foe the first time, only spirited rides like the HC trip are fun on the street.
Title: Re: Dilemma

... but, wouldnt the Monster be better suited for those long distance jaunts? The 848 is not long distance friendly, well at least not to me.
Title: Re: Dilemma
Post by: never2loud on July 08, 2008, 06:13:19 AM

Isn't Bryant looking for an older Monster to add to his stable?  And it's for the exact same reason I "re-acquired"  [laugh] the Monster 620; SBKs are some of the greatest bikes on the planet except when you're stuck riding them around town in stop and go traffic... about like trying to fly an f-16 around in a WalMart.

Alright... the next cup of coffee will be of the Bailey's variety - y'all stop talkin' for cryin' out loud  [laugh]

A lot of it is what you're used to, what you're more comfortable on.

I'm MUCH more comfortable on the Paul Smart than the Monster on longer trips (I've done several on both).

Ehhhh, who needs wives?

I have indeed done some long distance cruising on the 999; 1,200 miles in 36 hours.  2/3rds of the trip were track-like roads in Arkansas though so that made a HUGE difference.  It's the in-town stuff that really bogs me down...

Lots of good arguments to go either way... this is going to be a tough but welcome dilemma for sure. Hmm now my mind begins to wander to the costs associated with keeping a 748 trackable.

The only real part of this thread that caught my eye was the gun part. Do not ever part with your guns! Period. The thought of me coming over and shooting you for doing so should make you reconsider such foolishness! [laugh] Tamburinis can have some chronic problems that have been discussed at length in a recent thread regarding a 748 track bike for sale. Can't remember now who posted it. ??? But it's out there somewhere.

Tracking is all cool and what not but the fun you could have on the street every day and night 12 months out of the year on a Monster is something that you can't put a price on. Lisa bought her Monster back from Scott for a good reason. Constant fun, very road worthy for long multi day trips with the mob and if you don't think they can be ridden fast just try and follow Jacob on a twisty road on his bone stock S2R! Anyone want to argue with that? Thought not.

Yes, me ;D
I sold the Monster for good reason. Also, I think someone we know (who's name starts with "J" & rhymes with "acob") will be moving into an SBK when funds allow ;)

Thanks Fastwin, that whole selling of the firearms things was only a momentary lapse in judgement. I have decided to get a monster for some of the very reasons you mention and the fact that I would like to give the 848 some track time; crashing be damned.

So, I have made up my mind.... now which Monster to get!!! MUWAHHHAHAHA  [evil]

Uh you? (flaking rocker problem);D

OK let me give this one more shot.

A.  Buy the 748.  Track the sh1t out of it.  Get the bug out of your system.  Ride the 848 in town and on trips.  Man up.  It's part of what you pay for having a track bike and keeping your guns.  You can always buy a Monster later on.  Everyone does sooner or later.

Or B.  buy a Monster and track the 848.  Crash the 848 and kick yourself all day long.

Or C.  buy a Monster and track the 848.  Don't crash the 848 and be very careful.

OK now, who do you think you really are; A, B or C ?

CF JHP 1/2 system, mono and boposto setup complete with pegs (Mono is in excellent condition, I bought the Bi assembly to take the wife for a couple of runs, it needs help but is functional), kevlar front fender, cf 1/2 clutch cover, FIM chip, 190 rear tire and I have a brand new Avon rear thats a 180.....BUT WAIT, thats not all!  If you act within the next 1800 minutes, Ill throw in a 180 series rain tire for free AND the stock exhaust!!  Thats at least a $17,000 value for the low low price of $5500obo.

Bike is sweet, never seen rain, never down yada, yada, yada.  10k original miles on the clock, rockers checked and replaced under warranty early in the game. Belts replaced, oil changed at least 4 times.
