I bought this several months ago. No idea how long it sat without running but the tags expired in 2007. I probably could have made a good profit by parting it out but it had under 4K miles and was in great shape outside of the obvious.


Slowly acquired parts  ( thanks to derRoteBaron for an almost perfect yellow steel tank). After replacing almost all the FI components, it fired right up. Still not finished, have a blinker being delivered, and I have not even washed it yet. New seat was the first part ordered. They were full of crap calling it a comfort seat.

Not sure if I will keep it, and after parts (almost every fuel injection component) and time I will probably break even but at least it is back on the road.

Parts bike are great but this one had a clear title, all the keys, no miles, no crashes.

When I bought it I had hopes of saving the tank because it had not been dented or dropped, but those were soon dashed. FULL of rust. It was so bad I just junked everything inside except the gas cap. Not sure if it started from the outside or rusted so bad on the inside that it broke though and bubbled the outside finish.


Anyone notice how short the silencers are?  The whole time I was working on it I assumed it was a bone stock exhaust because nothing else had been touched, shocked me when it fired up and roared.

Great looking bike!  I'm a little partial to yellow Monsters too.  With that kind of mileage & condition, I certainly would have done the same as you!

I also bought my Monster from someone who let it sit for about 7 years.  Took quite a bit of work to get it running again, but it was mostly fuel related.  Almost didn't have to do anything to the motor itself.  I've now put 3K miles on it since getting it running again.

Feels good to have it going. I was so impatient towards the end, I replaced many things I probably didn't have too. Fuel injectors could have been cleaned, rubber boot for the fuel pump, etc. Out of everything that touches gasoline, the fuel cap and the fuel pressure regulator are the only things I didn't change out.

How about you?  Ethanol gasoline is a nasty nasty character. Was yours a carbed model?

Yeah mine is a 2001 M600 with carbs.  The previous owner said that he put stabil in the fuel before he let it sit for 7 years, but I don't think it made a difference.  Everything was really really gunked up.  Just like you I ended up putting a new fuel tank on, did the POR15 process and had the tank brazed while it was off.  Also put on a new fuel filter, petcock, pump, and new fuel lines.  The carbs were so bad that I ended up taking them to a local shop to have them cleaned and reassembled.  I add some seafoam to the fuel every 1000 miles or so just to keep everything clean.

620's with cored cans sound like any other Duc (minus the clutch rattle). [thumbsup]

They sound surprisingly good and whoever cut them did a clean job. I like the sound but honestly feel a bit sorry for the neighbors. All my previous bikes have been I-4's and you can sneak around at low revs if you want and be quiet.

I also have chopped/cored cans on my M600 and I am in the same boat.  I leave my house @ 7am and still feel bad.

Wow, this is awesome.  Thanks for posting.  I still have a soft spot for the 620, just a great bike... and don't feel sorry for the neighbors, if they are worth their salt they can appreciate the beautiful rumble of a Duc with cored cans!!!  lol
