Title: Tank level alarm and fuel lines
Post by: Qomomoko on November 10, 2013, 03:20:37 PM
2002 S4, the black nut spins and nothing else moves. Low level alarm is not coming in. Wanted to go inside and look, maybe change or clean filter and other cool things. The blinking light does work so that ain't it.
Forgot to label the fuel lines, does it matter or both go to injectors  but might mess up their timing?

If the light doesn't come on the sender is probably bad.

You don't get to the filter from the sender. You go in through the top to get to the filter.

Yes, it does matter which fuel line goes where. One is delivery and the other return.

thanks..

I will try tomorrow... from the top.. will be tight in there...

I am pretty sure I remember the fuel line placement, but will try to confirm online..

It is tight, but not bad to access just the filter. The pump is a different story.

The bottom of the tank should have a sticker saying which fitting is which.

The lines have a plastic ring from the factory with a letter on it. M is delivery and R is return.

Good to know.

one had a white rubber around, it probably was labeled as you mentioned, i will check it out shortly.

the filter, just a regular fuel filter right? if so I wont mess with it b/c it is working. I thought I had heard of some sort of charcoal filter, same this ? just a type of fuel filter?

Is there a low level float I can clean to make my low level alarm work (in case that is the problem) ?

if I screw the fuel lines up, bike simply wont start and  will just have to reverse them correct? (and there should be no damage?)

oh.. and what is the point of that nut that is underneath the tank, about and inch big? when unscrewing nothing moved , unless it tightens the filter or pump as it screws in and out?

The filter inside is a steel high pressure filter. NAPA 3032 works as an inexpensive replacement. If you go in, just change it if it hasn't been done in the last 6K miles. The charcoal filter you mention is probably the emissions canister which is not in the tank and is not serviceable. There is also a mesh filter on the pump pickup, but unless your tank is very rusty inside just leave well enough alone. If it ain't broke...

Is there a low level float I can clean to make my low level alarm work (in case that is the problem) ?The sender is not serviceable. Replacement only and only available from Ducati, or used

if I screw the fuel lines up, bike simply wont start and  will just have to reverse them correct? (and there should be no damage?) Yes

oh.. and what is the point of that nut that is underneath the tank, about and inch big? when unscrewing nothing moved , unless it tightens the filter or pump as it screws in and out? That plastic nut retains the fuel sensor. Once removed, the sensor will pull out of the tank. The power wires for the fuel pump run through the sensor, so don't try to remove unless you first disconnect from the pump.

Good luck

FYI, having trouble taking gas top off even though screws are out, hope not some glue used by previous owner.

Insert a hammer handle in the opening and slap the head of the hammer with your palm. Keep your other hand under the hammer head to avoid damage.

thanks again, it worked.

Tomorrow might play and change the fuel filter...  and research to see what and how I can play with the sender if possible and maybe it will work...

happy Thanks giving

anything else you think i should do?

The sender really isn't serviceable, but you can try. :-\

Grease the green o-ring on reassembly.

top of fuel tank back on, changed the fuel filter and changed the air vent hose that was broken.

bike wont start.

Really sure the fuel filter is in the right direction, or same direction as the previous fuel filter was.

The one part that I do not understand is the tank fuel lines.

there are two.
With only a Miniscule fuel, only one gravity drains. The other might if I had more fuel.

the two hoses.
one is labeled M
the other is labeled R

the one that is labeled M, appears to go to the front cylinder while the one labeled R appears to feed the rear cyclinder
the one labeled M is the one hooked to the tank fuel spigot that drains with Miniscule fuel and the other to the other one.

after several cranks and no start, I figured I might have made a mistake  and  swapped the fuel lines but still no start.

I figure it really should not matter which is connected if the pumps just send fuel and its the injectors in each cylinder that regulate the fuel. This does not make sense with the one gravity draining with little fuel and the other being different. I must have a major misconception of how this works.  [popcorn]

left battery on tender and will try later or tomorrow morning.

BTW.. putting the black rubber around the fual tank cap (not the green rubber) was a bit of a pain and made me wish i had three hands  ;D

Your tank has a sticker on the bottom telling you which fitting is delivery and return.

Alternately, the fitting that drains fuel from the tank is the return.

The line marked M (mandata) is delivery and the line marked R (ritorno) return.

in my limited experience, the one that drains freely is the return.

i used to have pictures of what's what under there, but they must be on my crashed HD.

The filter should have an arrow on it telling you which direction it should go.

The one that drain is to the R , still nothing. The fuel filter is or has to be I the right direction.  Will put more fuel  and hope she starts well.

Cycle the key on and off several times to completely bleed the system of air.

Also, check for kinked fuel lines.

Can you hear the fuel pump run for a second or so when you turn the key on?

The outlet of the fuel filter came loose or I forgot to hook it.  Thanks for help. No to put an air horn and int. tail light!
