I was riding down the freeway and I tried to accelerate to pass a car in 6th gear (75mph). As I was applying throttle my bike wasn't going any faster but the engine was revving as if it were in neutral. I pulled over and inspected the bike. It looked fine so I started her up and put her into gear, to my surprise the bike won't stall in first gear with the clutch out. I looked at my clutch and white smoke started coming out of it. Did I just burn my clutch or is it a more serious problem ? Never had this happen before.
The bike is an m900 carb'd dry clutch.
At minimum you need new clutch plates.

I figured. I took the clutch apart and inspected the plates. It's pretty rusted and I'm seeing it start to turn blue.
How many miles on the bike, and how many on the clutch?
Has about 23XXX miles and I have no idea how many miles on the clutch. Previous owner that I bought it from didn't know either but they look worn and rusted. I'll need to call you for the 12k service when I have time Nick.

I've seen a couple cases, once on a near-new pack, a friction plate lost all of the friction material on one side. ???
Resulting loss of stack thickness resulted in severe slipping.
I replaced the ravaged friction and mating ravaged steel, and it continued working fine until the owner sold the bike.
Another was a broken tab on a friction jamming the pack.
Other option is the needle bearing in the end of the trans shaft fails, wearing a groove in the pushrod, which can then hang up on bearing parts, resulting in low/no pinch from the pressure plate.

I had to replace the clutch on my 900SS at 18,000 miles. It could just be the clutch. I started noticing the issue first in top-gear sudden throttle applications. Typically, you see a little at a time and it just gets worse and worse.

Replaced the plates with Barnett pack. Problem still exists. Also found out my slave is leaking so I'm guessing it isn't pushing the push rod far enough resulting in my problem?? ???
The leaking slave would not cause slipping, it would cause clutch drag. Obviously, the slave does need attention. While it is off inspect the slave, throw out bearing and pushrod for signs of wear. A seized throw out bearing can cause the pushrod to drill through the piston. IMO, it is a good idea to change the throw out bearing whenever replacing plates on a dry clutch.
