Title: Home Page Suggestion.
Post by: polivo on November 19, 2013, 12:05:11 PM
I didnt know where this should go.. So I started the thread here.

Wouldnt it be cool if we could submit our bike pictures for Bike of the month contest.. or something along those lines?

The winner gets his bike , with a short blurb.. on the home page for a month?

Hey, i like t he bike on the home page as much as anyone else.. but sheesh, its been years. Lets freshen this place up?

ok, i read the  stickie.  With all due respect. The process as it is now doesnt work. The last submission is may of 2013.  The current home page still has the first entry, as the immediately viewable entry. No ones going to scroll down that entire thread to find their bike struffed somewhere in the middle. Theres no wow factor in that.

The most recent one is what shows when I hit the home page, and then I can scroll down to earlier ones.
Perhaps I'm not understanding what you're saying.

We rely on people writing up a story and pics to send in.
We're not holding any back....
We can't force folks to do it.

Another problem IMO with the current format is that the home page with all those pics becomes pretty damned heavy.

For anybody with a slower connection or trying to read the site from a mobile device it will be a slow-loading page. And the DMF server will be asked to send all those pics every time somebody clicks on the home page.

For people who have been on the board a while, it probably doesn't matter because they can bookmark or search for their preferred forum section and go straight to there.

For new people tho I wonder if it represents a barrier to entry.

Would the site get more traffic if the home page was an easier download? For example, just the top one or two BOMBs with a link to the rest.

The topic has come up before, and the front page has been pruned.

There is no easy way to archive the BoMB articles, and I didn't want to lose them.

I can make all but one or two invisible.

Maybe it's time to recycle some old ones and prune the page again. [thumbsup]

I like what moronics getting at. The BOMB should be , perhaps the last 3 entries to be submitted? Or maybe just the last ONE?  This might encourage users to resubmit when they get new goodies installed.. and want them to be seen by our community?  In any case, im going to find some pics of my bike.. because i want that spot!
:)

Can you get (another?) Photobucket account and put them there?
I don't mind if mine is gone - I'll just re-enter when the modifications are done  [laugh]

Aha! I thought it was much better when I checked today than it used to be.

There was a time a few years ago when I couldn't load that page. I was on broadband but using a relatively ancient computer (well, maybe five years old  :o). Got me wondering how many others got the same result and concluded the site had died.

Okay, that hadn't occurred to me but I see the problem.

Could you create a new home page that contained just the top couple of BOMB stories? Then reassign the home page address to that page.

Supply a link on that page to the current BOMB page, readdressed.

The current BOMB page would then be the archive. If it were broken into a series of pages, making it a multi-page thread rather than a single page, you could add new stuff to it endlessly. (Ah, but I just realised you probably can't add stuff to the front!  [bang] )

Anyway, this is obviously getting some thought at the top. Thanks guys for all your hard work.  [beer] I love this site and its history.

What I can do is try to copy them into a separate board.

The problem is I'd have to weed out all the HTML code so they wouldn't look stupid.

I don't mind keeping the pics on the server.

BTW...

I started from the beginning.

I'm not enough of a geek to figure out how SMF and Simple Portal interact.

I think the best alternative is what I suggested above.
Bring back memories Trav?  :P

Any definition on what constitutes a "write up" or "article"?  I have considered submitting my bike several times, but have procrastinated because of the "writing up" part.

My bike has a pretty cool story.  If there was some guidelines on how much content is desired I would feel better about committing.  Just my $0.02

Do a write up and submit it with pics, Nate will do the rest. It's just not that big of a deal, or more members would be doing it. There are plenty of threads with tons of pics of members bikes.

Write up something with some pictures, send it in.

AFAIK, we've not refused a submission.

There is no actual format.

The bike doesn't have to be highly modified.

It doesn't even have to be a Duc.

After reading this thread, I just might write mine up.  Too bad I no longer have the GS1150ES.  That's the only bike my wife climbed off of and said "I won't be riding with you on this one again."  For reference, she's been on multiple part-dragging runs on Deals Gap on my M750, her being afraid of a bike is saying something.
