I've had this intermittent issue for awhile now, basically sometimes the bike will start, other times it won't. Just depends what day it is. The battery should be fine, I suspect something with the fuel flow to the motor which is why I try to blip the throttle some, but I really have no clue.
I took this video of it happening. It seems clear the bike is trying to turn over so I think the battery and starter are good, but it just won't take.
Any advice appreciated!

Stop manipulating the throttle. It does no good on a FI engine.
Try turning the kill switch to on before you turn the key on. Turn key, let pump cycle, and hit starter.
You can hear the pump cycling...correct?

High-pitched sound from the tank? I think that's it.
I'd describe it more as a hum...but I'm pretty deaf. :P

Could it be a vacuum noise because of clogged fuel cap breather?
Luckily I got it started (followed the sequence) and rode it home from the parking lot it had been sitting in for 3 days. But I know it hasn't gone away.
how old is your battery?
If you can still hear the fuel pump priming, then its not the wiring harness to the pump which seems to be a common (or growing) problem which was a problem i had. My mechanic has been seeing the problem with the 999's and S2R1k's...
the cost to replace it ( harness) was about 1100.00 :o. Luckily Chris@ Cal cycleworks made a replacement part for a whopping 100 bucks.. [thumbsup]
I believe Chris has discontinued that item due to reliability issues.

a year or so.. though I'm pretty sure that's not at the root of the problem. It's been going on for awhile.

Yep… The fuel leaks down between the wiring and the insulation… Mine is doing it now but its not too bad so i'm still letting 'er 'rip until another solution (under a grand) presents itself.
How does it run when it does start? If it is a fuel flow issue then it should also be apparent when it does start.

Once the motor actually starts I usually have to give it a little gas to get going, otherwise if I let go of the throttle it usually dies.
Unfortunately this has been the #1 issue with this bike over the years - it tends to die when idling though other times it will be fine (such as when it's in the shop >:( )
What has the shop done to fix the problem? TPS, base CO setting and synch are good starting points. 800 or 1000? If a 1000 is the stepper motor working?
Not much, as they couldn't reproduce the issue last time. I believe the fuel filter was replaced. It's gotten definitely worse now though, so it will probably go back in soon. It is a 1000.
there is a hose for the stepper motor that can be kinkced up causing the bike to not start and fail to idle. its feed from the airbox on front left side IIRC.
Dropped it at the shop this weekend. We'll see what turns up. The stepper motor was mentioned. Hopefully if it's just a kinked hose they'll catch that. Apparently the ECU can be flashed to bypass the stepper motor if need be. Interesting.

I dont think thats correct. the stepper motor is mechanical. you would have to tell the ECU to forget it AND physically ditch it.

Mechanical yes...if the ecu disregards it what is the necessity to remove it?
