Title: Dishwashers Post by: Dirty Duc on December 13, 2013, 04:25:13 PM Like the title says... talk to me. [popcorn]
I can't say anything nice about the non-cleaning tasmanian devil that has been masquerading as a useful machine for the last year and a half... yes, that's when I bought it. Stainless exterior is the only design requirement not linked to the name of the thing. ;D Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: lethe on December 13, 2013, 04:31:45 PM We have a KitchenAid.
Seems to work well Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: SpikeC on December 13, 2013, 04:49:30 PM ASKO!!!
Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: Dirty Duc on December 13, 2013, 05:16:02 PM ASKO!!! Their model line is less than self-explanatory, and their website is pretty chock full of useless code (in other words, it loads slowly and crashes my internet connection). Can you expound on the virtues of this Asko? We have a KitchenAid. I see that the KitchenAid Superba gets good reviews. Are we talking it "just works" or does it have snazzy things that make it more cooler? How's reliability?Seems to work well Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: lethe on December 13, 2013, 05:26:34 PM I see that the KitchenAid Superba gets good reviews. Are we talking it "just works" or does it have snazzy things that make it more cooler? How's reliability? Cleans stuff well, no visible buttons as all the controls are on the top edge, I don't know, how much more can a dishwasher do? [laugh]We've had it awhile with no issues. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: Dirty Duc on December 13, 2013, 05:32:59 PM I don't know, how much more can a dishwasher do? [laugh] See, I was asking myself that question as I was reading all the ridiculous claims on dishwasher company websites...On a side note, why do dishwasher manufacturers have to employ the latest bandwidth-sucking internet baubles? I want to know about your dishwasher, not see some exciting animated depiction of your Lean manufacturing process in 4k HD 2037 future web trick codec. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: LMT on December 13, 2013, 06:16:25 PM I fill the sink with hot soapy water and wash the dishes. Easy, does not break and cheap!
Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: Adamm0621 on December 13, 2013, 06:55:29 PM I fill the sink with hot soapy water and wash the dishes. Easy, does not break and cheap! That's not true... My dishwasher (girlfriend) routinely breaks my dishes following the exact method you supplied. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: Howie on December 13, 2013, 09:27:16 PM I fill the sink with hot soapy water and wash the dishes. Easy, does not break and cheap! If it was up to me my dishwasher would become a cabinet. We have an LG. Quiet, holds a lot, been reliable. One flaw I can think of. No "clean" light. Do check, I don't know if it is still true, but as of a few years ago Kitchen Aid, Maytag and Whirlpool were all based on the same mechanicals and had the same fatal flaw. The food chopper was attached to the pump. If something got caught in the chopper causing it to jam the cheaper chopper would survive but the expensive pump wouldn't. I don't know what the other brands did to solve the problem but Whirlpool's fix was to shorten the warranty on the pump. My first choice since I can't follow LMT's advice would be Bosch. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: The Architect on December 14, 2013, 03:10:21 AM What he said ^^^^^^^ We had a relatively new whirlpool. What a pain in the ass. I had to work on it every six months.
We switched to a Bosch over 5 years ago. It's been flawless since we bought it. We liked it so much we bought a Bosch washer and dryer. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: Speedbag on December 14, 2013, 04:38:33 AM I've got a 20-year-old Whirlpool that's on its last legs, so I've been looking too.....
My mom has a new Bosch that's pretty awesome, you can hardly hear the thing run. I'm leaning that way too. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: ungeheuer on December 14, 2013, 04:45:25 AM We have a Miele. It cleans well and and has put in around 5 years of reliable service (fan motor replaced under warranty early on - not coz it failed but coz it got noisy, been fine since). The thing I like most about it is that it has a top shelf cutlery tray instead of the more usual basket. The thing I like least is that - for reasons of energy efficiency - it's uses residual heat from the washing process to dry the dishes. Which works fine on everything except plastic. Everything plastic always comes out wet :-\ But at least global warning will be delayed by an immeasurably puny amount [thumbsup].
Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: Howie on December 14, 2013, 05:30:35 AM Miele makes great stuff. Here in the US owning one is a little like owning a Ducati. Dealers and service can be sparse in much of the country.
Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: ducpainter on December 14, 2013, 05:36:51 AM <snip> But at least global warning will be delayed by an immeasurably puny amount [thumbsup]. It's all in the numbers... ;D And the only reason I'm Singing you this song now is cause you may know somebody in a similar Situation, or you may be in a similar situation, and if your in a Situation like that there's only one thing you can do and that's walk into The shrink wherever you are ,just walk in say "Shrink, You can get Anything you want, at Alice's restaurant.". And walk out. You know, if One person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and They won't take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony, They may think they're both faggots and they won't take either of them. And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in Singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. They may think it's an Organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said Fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and Walking out. And friends they may thinks it's a movement. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: Skybarney on December 14, 2013, 08:04:03 AM My Aunt and Uncle are big fans of Wolf Appliances. Really nicely setup racks, cleans dishes incredibly well and no more reliable than anything else. Five years after install it needs a pump.
Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: Dirty Duc on December 14, 2013, 09:00:05 AM I don't mind a commercial-grade dishwasher, but a cursory search of the world does not reveal Wolf-brand dishwashers. Mostly fridges and ovens it looks like.
the Bosch's appear to get mixed reviews... I'm assuming there's a price point in there line that bumps the reliability. I haven't seen anything bad about the Miele except for customer service stuff. We have an LG. It sings a happy little song after it is done sounding like an industrial threshing machine for 3 hours and not cleaning my dishes. It used to work pretty well, but now it doesn't. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: koko64 on December 14, 2013, 09:25:06 AM Asko were a top brand for quite awhile, not sure now.
Very robust, reliable, effective machines and the first to have kid locks in the 80s. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: rgramjet on December 14, 2013, 09:52:11 AM Don't buy GE Monogram.
Pisses me off every time I go into my kitchen. Every piece has has a substantive flaw......Shouldn't "High End" shit last more than 5 years and one month? My friend has a Hobart commercial dishwasher. 2 minute wash cycle and requires its own hood. Don't even think about putting plastic in that thing. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: Randimus Maximus on December 14, 2013, 10:22:54 AM My two previous homes had the KitchenAid Superba dishwashers and they were fantastic. Did a great job cleaning the dishes and uber quiet. I never lived in either home long enough to worry about durability issues. :P
I now have a really cheap Frigidaire model that I'm pretty sure my neighbors can hear. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: ducatiz on December 14, 2013, 11:20:09 AM We have a Miele.
It is awesome. They use a top drawer for silverware which frees up a lot of space. And they clean exceptionally well, but they are not cheap -- and they have a warranty which makes it worthwhile. They also have the best sound insulation, bar none. You will not know the dishwasher is running at all unless you have your face on the front. I can't overemphasize how good they are and how useful the silverware drawer is. Bosch and Miele basically have the same pump, etc but the Miele have better features. We're renovating the kitchen, and had no dishwasher before. We went with Miele over Bosch for the same reasons, and the top mounted silverware rack is a nice feature. We've only washed 3 loads so far, but it is very quiet. It would be a possibility. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: ducatiz on December 14, 2013, 04:09:57 PM Miele - 10 year warranty. Can't beat that.
Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: ducpainter on December 14, 2013, 04:24:10 PM What model do you have 'Tiz?
Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: ducatiz on December 14, 2013, 04:33:19 PM A Futura, but they are all called that. Ours cost about 1200 but I think the MSRP was like 1800. The warranty was a big part of the deal for us plus the sound and silverware tray.
And to be sure, we bought it in 2008 and I would buy it again in a minute. We've had no problems whatsoever. My SiL bought one too around the same time and it is doing nicely as well. **edit Ithink they have a TOP TOP of the line model called Futura Diamond, but ours is a regular Futura. They have similar features, but I think the Diamond series comes with more and also with a midget to install it. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: ducpainter on December 14, 2013, 07:03:12 PM It seems the major differences are the sound levels.
We're looking at appliances for the new house, and this one sounds like a real winner based on the warranty and features. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: ducatiz on December 14, 2013, 07:20:58 PM Its worth the cost. We had a GE at our old house. Brand new. Sounded like a diesel truck.
Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: Rameses on December 14, 2013, 10:21:42 PM My friend has a Hobart commercial dishwasher. 2 minute wash cycle and requires its own hood. Don't even think about putting plastic in that thing. We had one of those in a bar/restaurant I used to run. Definitely not for home use if it's the same model I've encountered. Very effective though. I'm convinced I could've put something in there coated in concrete, as long as it didn't have over 48 hours to cure, and it would've come out clean. But beware of the steam billowing out of it when you open it, and the $5,000 used price tag... Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: ungeheuer on December 14, 2013, 11:50:02 PM We have a Miele. Agreed. I think you're going to find that problem with all the modern high efficiency dishwashers. Our Bosch does the same thing. The Miele is the dishwasher to have. I read somewhere that Miele manufacturers almost everything on their appliances, even the screws. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: ducatiz on December 15, 2013, 05:54:31 AM Agreed. How do you find yours dries plastic items? That's my only gripe. No problem if it is dishwasher safe and top (middle on the Miele) rack. The big issue is making sure something is holding it down because the jets on the Miele are pretty hearty. The miele have their own true dry cycle -- forced air. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: ducatiz on December 15, 2013, 05:56:58 AM I think you're going to find that problem with all the modern high efficiency dishwashers. Our Bosch does the same thing. I have read that Bosch and Miele actually use some shared components but don't quote me on that. Notably, both are german design but I think the Bosch are assembled in the US (ones for the US market). I do know the Mieles have the lowest complaint/repair/return rate in the industry. Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: Dirty Duc on December 15, 2013, 08:20:14 AM You had me at 10 year warranty. The Miele sounds like a winner at this point.

Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: yamifixer on December 16, 2013, 09:26:48 AM I put an LG in 3 months after I bought my house (the One the builder put in was useless) Had zero problems other than it takes the paint off my collection of pint glasses. so I hand was them with my knives.
Title: Re: Dishwashers Post by: the_Journeyman on December 16, 2013, 10:08:49 AM I've got a GE, some type of upline my dad found on the scratch & dent rack a Lowe's. The year I bought my house. It's been in for nearly 10 years now and not a single problem yet. Dishes are so hot you can't remove them as soon as the cycles stop. Not bad loud either, doesn't harm plastic but never dries the little bit of water that collects in the lip of plastic containers.
