Title: Gyro stabilized GoPro on the Monster Post by: dark_duc on January 03, 2014, 10:45:44 AM For Christmas I treated myself to a Terot T-2D Gimbal for the Hero 3 that is normally used on quad copters. The gimbal provides 2 axis stabilization under very rigorous conditions providing ultra smooth video. I decided to see how it would do on the Monster. I am pretty happy with the results although I fought some issues with the Gimbal shutting down due to excessive lean angles and too much speed would give it fits trying to stabilize. I had to take it easy to prevent this but still got some very smooth video...some of the smoothest I have seen on a motorcycle mounted camera. I even mounted it to my helmet mid video. Don't forget to watch in 1080 [thumbsup]

On a related note, I'm glad I stiffened the springs on my 620. You wouldn't have a lot of travel available to navigate our crater strewn goat trails. OK, after google-mapping your ride area, I guess I'm hating you.... Thanks for sharing! Way better than the gimbal camera view of Rossi's ass from MotoGP. Title: Re: Gyro stabilized GoPro on the Monster Post by: kopfjÀger on January 03, 2014, 02:30:34 PM Very nice, but your bike sounds terrible. :P
Title: Re: Gyro stabilized GoPro on the Monster Post by: roggie on January 03, 2014, 03:10:03 PM very smooth indeed... thanks for sharing [thumbsup]
and also a location hater since i have to live with the endless flat grid-like roads in metro Detroit >:( Title: Re: Gyro stabilized GoPro on the Monster Post by: red baron on January 03, 2014, 05:58:43 PM How is dead Indian road? Looks like a road trip is in my future. [Dolph]
Title: Re: Gyro stabilized GoPro on the Monster Post by: dark_duc on January 03, 2014, 06:02:51 PM Thanks guys.
Yes, I have to say I am very lucky to live in Southern Oregon. Awesome roads and you can ride almost all year. Oh, a dead Indian road is a blast in the summer, but garbage in the winter months due to the crushed rock they lay down at the higher elevations. Title: Gyro stabilized GoPro on the Monster Post by: ab on January 03, 2014, 09:44:13 PM Please post up pic of camera mounted on bike. This is a great post. A buddy and I have been trying to find any product for bike to do what you did. Is the equipment stable? Any issues? Any extra detail you can provide is greatly appreciated. I got to research the cost of this gyro next.
Title: Re: Gyro stabilized GoPro on the Monster Post by: dark_duc on January 03, 2014, 09:58:04 PM ab, I learned a ton from this (watch the end of the video to show what they used):
Tarot T-2D Brushless Gimbal on Motorcycle (DIY) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UX3HigN8r8Y#) Although, I didn't care for the way they secured the gimbal to the suction cup mount. I came up with a better solution using a flat adhesive mount and some longer hardware. This allows for easier switching from left to right. I have had others ask how I set it up so I will post up a video and pictures tomorrow showing the details. Title: Re: Gyro stabilized GoPro on the Monster Post by: ab on January 03, 2014, 10:17:26 PM Thanks dark_duc. I look forward to your post. Plz include info about how long the battery life for the motor as well :). Thanks again for sharing.
Title: Re: Gyro stabilized GoPro on the Monster Post by: GK on January 04, 2014, 02:11:07 AM Nice!
I've just ordered a GoPro3 for myself tonight. Looking forward to getting some riding footage myself. GK Title: Re: Gyro stabilized GoPro on the Monster Post by: red baron on January 04, 2014, 07:26:06 AM Throwing that K1600 like it's a toy. [evil]
Title: Re: Gyro stabilized GoPro on the Monster Post by: joshuajcrouch on January 04, 2014, 09:13:36 AM Nice job dark_duc! Very impressive. I live in Eugene and come down to the Grants Pass area quite regularly.
I also fly multirotors :) Never thought about combining the two technologies... Title: Re: Gyro stabilized GoPro on the Monster Post by: bob795 on January 04, 2014, 05:14:56 PM Nice video dark_duc ... as seevstsaab said, very smooth [thumbsup]

Title: Re: Gyro stabilized GoPro on the Monster Post by: ab on January 06, 2014, 09:26:06 PM Thank you Darc_duc for the detailed review and answering our questions. Really appreciate it.
Do you think a gopro hero2 would mount on it? Assuming just Velcro it? My ultimate goal is to mount it on the rear cowl and get a shot of rider leaning etc and the road - the same shot as Motogp. If you ever take a shot like that, please post the link here :) Title: Re: Gyro stabilized GoPro on the Monster Post by: dark_duc on January 07, 2014, 08:01:14 PM ab, unfortunately, the Hero 2 won't work with this gimbal. The camera holder is formed just for the hero 3. The gimbal is also non adjustable so putting a heavier camera in it that can't be balanced will not let it operate correctly. I also updated my original review as I changed the mount which should work better. The new footage is at 1:37 and lasts until 3:07.

Good info on the aluminum plate you added. Thanks again for your explanation and time posting the videos and sharing. Ride safe!
Title: Re: Gyro stabilized GoPro on the Monster Post by: dark_duc on January 07, 2014, 08:15:57 PM No worries and I am glad to help! I am a GoPro nerd so I will be experimenting a lot with this in the upcoming months and will post up as I sort stuff out. Ride safe as well [beer]
