Title: Monster 696 2008/ 2010 ECU differences ?
Post by: The Cookie Monster on January 22, 2014, 09:54:07 AM
As the subject already reveals, does anyone know if there is somekind of differences between the 696 ECU  from 2008 and 2010?

the reason why i am asking is:  when I bought my monster, it came with CF termi cans and ECU. and as i live in switzerland where everything is not
allowed or made insanely difficult with laws and regulations, i need to put on a stock ECU for the technical inspection.

would be nice to know if something will blow if i put the new ECU on my bike ???

Are you sure they'll know the difference?

Also, wondering how carbon (non catalytic?) cans would be approved...

From what I have understand the map is the same at the bottom of the rev range and only gets slightly richer mid range and above.  As posted previously its the fact the carbon cans have no cats that will be your big problem not the ECU (for type approval that is) Also if you look on the can straps it says NOT for ROAD USE or RACE USE ONLY (can't remember which it is ).  They are not stupid. But yes you could use the standard ECU but I would not ride it hard or go too far.

What checks do they actually perform during inspection?

im pretty sure they will see the difference. with the dp ECU the display posts the words " m696  racing"... a Monster with a stock ECU only displays " m 696" (correct me if im wrong).  like Yogi said, they are not stupid.

Stopintime, you are right the cans definitely are not approved, for racing only it reads on the side. And that is why i have bought the set of stock cans and that 2010 ECU.

For the inspection itself i dont have first hand experience, but for sure they would spot the cans if i leave them on and following that lead, propably the ECU aswell. general condition of the bike of course, brakes, leaks, etc. also papers, and a handling test.

later on i think i will have to get some aftermarket cans that have approval, so i dont have to worry about the inspections anymore.
Thanks a million for your help! :)

Not sure which version of 696 you would have in Switzerland, but I checked the parts catalogues for the USA models, and '08/'10 ECU have the same part number.

You can download 'location appropriate' parts catalogues from Ducati here:

I'd ask the closest Ducati dealer about the ECU.

I agree speeddog. in fact i just got the answer from a local dealer. They had a look at the ECU part numbers and the one i bought is ok to fit on my bike also.

apparently the only thing to check for is whether the bike is equipped with ABS or not. if you try to put a box with ABS on a bike with no ABS, it will not work. the same vice versa. and in case i leave the ECU in for longer, he recommends to do a "nullabgleich" ,  not sure what it means.. waiting for an answer from the dealer.

Maybe/probably a reflash, as in a tuning for your set up.

(null is zero, abgleich is adjustment)
