I first saw this video years ago and this has been my go to method since. The last chain I replaced I got almost 19,000 miles on it and it probably didn't really need replaced.

Its not necessary, but it makes the job easier and much faster, which means you'll end up doing it more often. Though, I've broken a few of them being too harsh with it.
