Title: Starter Control Transmission System
Post by: JoshuaCJCohen on February 08, 2014, 07:47:29 PM
My starter control transmission lever is busted.  The screws heads broke off and I've been trying to get the screws out.  During the process I cracked the housing itself and need to get a new piece.

I have a 1999 M900 Dark.  The housing I have screws into the clutch drive pump in two places.

I can only find a 2000 parts catalog.  The part shown only has one screw.

If I order this part and screw, #4 and #5, will it work?  Any chance there is an after market option?

Thanks,
JCJC

Dunno if the part will work, might be different since an '00 is fuel injected.   You could order from a dealer and if it is wrong it is their mistake.  It is just a cable and lever.  Something like this might work   http://www.lowbrowcustoms.com/p1266/buy/m-c-parts/bars-risers-amp-controls/levers-amp-throttles/emgo-choke-air-lever-for-7-8-quot-bars-right-hand-triumph-bsa-norton-/?CAWELAID=600008210000004101&catargetid=1933026064&cadevice=c&cagpspn=pla&gclid=CIvnht-cvrwCFeYDOgodZEAAXg (http://www.lowbrowcustoms.com/p1266/buy/m-c-parts/bars-risers-amp-controls/levers-amp-throttles/emgo-choke-air-lever-for-7-8-quot-bars-right-hand-triumph-bsa-norton-/?CAWELAID=600008210000004101&catargetid=1933026064&cadevice=c&cagpspn=pla&gclid=CIvnht-cvrwCFeYDOgodZEAAXg)

Mine is FI also.  I'm concerned about the 1 screw vs. 2 screw attachment scheme I have.  But it might be a mute point since the screws were so rusted into the clutch drive pump they both broke off in the housing.  Now I have to try to drill the screws out without destroying the treads.  Sucks.

1999 would be a carbie, AFAIK.

Any dealer should be able to get you the right parts.

Sorry, I mispoke. It is a 2000 model, produced in 1999, which is why I keep getting confused.  When I sent my VIN to Ducati of Omaha they said it was a 1999.  Ductai customer service had to do some digging to find the details on why the VIN was confusing dealers.

I'm going to the local Japanese Ducati dealer now to price the part.  If it isn't ridiculous I'll order from them. If not I have found the below.

http://www.domino-group.com/en/catalogue/otherProducts_Detail.aspx?idmaster=1669 (http://www.domino-group.com/en/catalogue/otherProducts_Detail.aspx?idmaster=1669)

http://www.domino-group.com/en/catalogue/otherProducts_Detail.aspx?idmaster=1673 (http://www.domino-group.com/en/catalogue/otherProducts_Detail.aspx?idmaster=1673)

I think either will work.

Thanks,
Josh

if the look at the parts catalogue, you'll see part # 3 has a qty of 2 on the rh side.

Brad,
I just saw that.  Went to the Ducati dealer and he quoted me $67 for the starter control (without screws, "Why want screw? Hardware store go!", he said in broken English) and a week wait.

Besides the after market mods I posted above anyone have any ideas?  I'm going to work that Domino part if able.

When I was putting things back on the handlebars (new Rizoma) I noticed it didn't have any holes drilled for the left side electronic bundle or the throttle.  This is my first handlebar rebuild.  I'm assuming I put everything on (but loose) get the bar in the ....handlebar holder at the angle I want, tighten down all non-pegged pieces and then drill holes for the pegged ones.

If someone has a better method or a step by step rebuild guide I would appreciate a pointer.

Thanks,
Josh

Found one on Ebay from Imperial Motorcycles of Denver.  Now to drill the broken screws out of the clutch control.  Sucks.

i wouldnt drill holes. Then your stuck in that one position and if you dont like it. well too bad. I grind off the nubs. theres enough friction to hold it in place.

Starter Control Transmission System is Ducati talk for choke lever, attached to the clutch master.  Those are the screws that are broken.

Joshua, try backing the screws out with a tiny center punch first.  Or something like this  http://www.sears.com/craftsman-3-pc-screw-out-174-damaged-screw/p-00952154000P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1 (http://www.sears.com/craftsman-3-pc-screw-out-174-damaged-screw/p-00952154000P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1)   If they fail try, if you can get one, a left hand drill.  Not much room for error there.

I was talking about the new rizoma handle bars, unless I'm misunderstanding him
