I remember reading about "spherical" heads/valvetrain a LONG time ago....

Rotary valve engines have been around almost as long as internal combustion engines.  Great idea if someone gets it to be reliable.  Less parts, less rotating mass, less friction loss, and the ability to run incredibly high compression ratios.
