Title: S2R Throttle stuck open
Post by: Kabulpostie on February 16, 2014, 06:04:39 PM
'06 S2R1000. I just put on the Rizoma touring bars from Monster parts and everything went well until I tried to reassemble the throttle. I cant find an exploded diagram that shows how it goes together. The issue is that it seems like in order for the two pieces that go together over the cam the throttle is activated. I don't thinks it's the cable as I get the same result with the assembly together and unmounted. What the heck am I doing wrong?

Thanks for the help, getting tired of starting the bike only to have it rev to the limit.. [bang]

Remove the small cover/guide that's held on with the phillips screws, then assemble the throttle halves on the bar.
Grease the groove in the cover then install.

I'm not in the garage now, and won't try anymore tonight, but I thought I was doing that. I guess it would help if you could explain how the mechanism works..I drilled a hole for the tab that should e in the right place, but even when I had the assembly off the bar I was getting the same result. I know this is probably a simple problem, but man it was  beating me up this afternoon!

I've had this happen two times after I did bar work.  Not sure if this helps, but thought I'd share my experiences in case something applies to your situation:

The first time, I didn't realize the assembly had that nub/nipple.  I was able to reassemble, probably putting a lot of stress on the unit since the nub had no hole to enter, and the throttle got stuck.  Eventually, I figured it out and drilled a new hole and the problem was solved.  It sounds like you have done this but maybe check to make sure it is deep/wide enough for the nub and is actually fitting properly.

The second time, I had replaced the throttle cable.  For some reason, the throttle was sticking when I reattached the controls.  It turned out that my bar end mirror, which was attached around the bar (rather than in the end hole), was butted tight against the throttle and so it was not allowing the throttle to snap back.  I spaced it a tiny bit and the problem was solved.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input, however no joy this morning same issue. I'm thinking that I might need a longer cable? But that doesn't really make sense to me as there is not a huge difference in the bars (these are the ones I put on..touring model   url]http://www.monsterparts.com/pc/MA005/Bars-Mirrors/MA005.html[/url]

I have some pics below, but in order to get the to covers to go together I have to move the cam quite a ways to get them to connect. If I remove the assembly from the bars and start it with it hanging everything is fine. I have the cable adjusted all the way out, on the stock bars it was tightened almost all the way. I'm stumped and frustrated...High 70's a day off, new helmet and no bike:( [shot]

You might get the length you need by rerouting the cable.  Before hitting the road make sure you can turn the bars without increasing idle speed.

First off I think you need to screw that adjuster all the way in instead of out.

Yes, you've consumed 3/4" or more of cable right there.

So I debated on whether or not to bring an end to this thread due to extreme embarrassment, but I figure there may be other mechanical, logical and trouble shooting ignorami out there ;D Spikec hit the nail on the head, rather than have the cable adjusted all the way out I did in fact have it adjusted all the way in (I'm looked for the emoticon with head up ass but couldn't find one). On the bright side I learned a little bit more about the bike even if it was really simple so I'll take that as a plus.
The bars are great, it's amazing what a couple of mm can do to change a rider's position, I feel far more upright and not so stretched out. It's an odd feeling, but I think it actual helps me ride better as normally my arms are almost stretched out straight (most motorcycles are not made for micro people). The only downside is that it seems like there is a little less room for the switch gear and mirrors so everything is crowded pretty close on the bars.
Thanks for the understanding and not taking the piss too much. Stand by this weekend for more exciting adventure by Cameron where changes out his blinkers. Subject will include: Did you connect the wires? Did you connect the wires in the correct order? Is the bike on? Is the bike on that you attached the signals to? and Are you sure you cennected the wires? [laugh]  Thanks again all, cheers  [drink], happy  [Dolph],and keep it rubber side down.

Good the hear the problem is solved.  No reason to be embarrassed.  Find someone who hasn't pulled their hair out trying to figure out why their bike won't start only to find out later the bike was out of fuel, pet cock turned off or kill switch on.
