Title: S2r 800 Tank options...
Post by: Jonathan on February 25, 2014, 02:18:54 PM
I just acquitted my first Ducati, a 2005 s2r800 with barely 400 miles. I've got the issues settled that you'd expect with a bike that's averaged 40 miles per year but I do have the dreaded tank expansion.

My questions are: is Ducati still replacing tanks even though settlement date has expired?

What tank options do I have other than buying an OEM tank or eBay tank?

The tank has expanded enough that it touches the controls when the bars are turned and the closing latch is not working properly, though I work around that.

I got a good enough deal that I'm not sorry for the purchase, the bike isn't even broken in yet, but I'd like to have a good functioning tank.

Thanks in Advance,
Jonathan

Sponsor California Cycle Works has a tank option. Also, forum member Ducatiz is working on an alloy tank replacement, so you could pm him. Also check with the other sponsors like Motowheels for sourcing an alloy or used tank. Then there's the WTB section on the forum.

Sounds like a good deal, just do a full maintenance schedule, belts, fluids, filters, rubber components, etc.

Forgiveness is a powerful act  [thumbsup]

Some have had success returning it back to it's original shape by emptying it and letting it dry for a few (winter?) months.

I thought about drying the tank but Winter in Fla is the time to ride (http://;d)

Thanks, ill check those options. Such a nice bike. I'm not sure how it sat mostly unused for a decade.

Note: Having the tank touch the controls when the bars are turned is more a sign of the steering stops not being set than it is of the tank expanding, and is very common.

If the tank is not too far out of whack, you can loosen the hinge a little and budge the tank back a so the latch will work.

Perfect, thanks!

Talk to your nearest dealer, find out if they'll still honor the tank recall.... worst that can happen is they say no.
Try a couple more dealers after that if you need to.

Perfect, thanks!

If that's not enough (very likely), part of the Official Ducati Tank Fix ( [roll] ) is a revised rear bracket that moves the tank back a bit.
Makes it a bit harder to get the seat latched, but not so bad from the ones I've seen.
You may be able to talk the dealer into providing the bracket if they refuse doing the whole tank.

Are dealers keen to warranty bikes they didn't sell or won't service? I do most of my own work.

Ill drop in later this week to a local dealer.

Thx

AFAIK, dealers cannot refuse legitimate warranty work.

It's past the deadline, but a couple of my customers have gotten it done recently.
Dunno exactly when.

The dealer may realize that extending some goodwill can help in the long run.

Depends on the dealer. Where in FL are you located?

a few thoughts...

while the steering stops may not be set correctly, it is very possible that it's due to the expanded tank, particularly a bike that sat as much as you imply.

i had my tank warrantied by a dealer who i did not buy from, after the "expiration."

if you do get a replacement under warranty, get it treated before you use it, or you will be right back where you started.

if no one will replace for you, get a metal tank. the swap is relatively simple.

I presume you contacted Sebastian@Melillimoto and Euro Cycles in Tampa. You should check with Forza all the way down in Pompano.

I think the swelling is at least partly to blame. I had to remove the ignition cover to get the tank back on and it's already slid all the way back on its rear mount.

I will check with the locals shops around in a day or so when I have the time to call around. I appreciate all the advice of my options.

I do have a local gas station that sells non ethanol fuel, that will be where I fill regardless and this bike will be commuted on daily about 30 miles all year round. Hopefully that will cease the expansion.
