Title: Timing belt shelf life?
Post by: DexterMorgan on February 26, 2014, 04:25:29 PM
I searched around a little but wanted to ask you guys here. I am thinking about buying my timing belts before I actually need them. (Rather not discuss the "why"). But was wondering if they would be ok to buy now. I only have 3000 miles on my bike so far.  Do these things go bad if they are just sitting in a tool box?  If so, how long?

"Typically six years". That will work for me. I'll hang them up in the heated garage.   Anyone else?

Can't quote an authoritative reference, but my gut feeling is that it is better to store them laying flat and probably in a sealed bag if we are talking an extended period.

Make sure to purge the bag of O2 and replace with argon or some other inert gas, then add the o2 sponges, if you really want to get crazy.
