If I plan on doing this, will I have to pull the motor? I'm also planning on doing the belts at the same time if that matters.
No, if you look at your engine, all 4 valve covers can be accessed with the motor in the bike. You may need to move some items to get to the top cylinders. Not sure which bike you have.
i have an 05 S2R 800.
Yeah, i did notice that its fairly open.
Also, are there any special tools required for the job?
did you watch the video?
yeah i did but beside those "modified" forceps, is there a special tool required to turn the engine?
there is, you can purchase it at desmotimes.com you can also spin your rear wheel at a high gear with the spark plugs out.
Thanks a lot for the help He Man.
One last bit. Im getting the parts in today to measure the valves and swap the belts but upon further inspection last night... it looks like the vertical cylinder exhaust valve may be blocked by the rear shock. How can you safely remove the rear shock? i cant seem to find any good jacking points under the bike. (S2r800)
you dont need to remove the rear shock to get to it. It would be much roomier, but you can reach in there once you remove the batterybox, ecu/etc.
If you wanted to remove it anyway, youd have to stablize teh front of the bike and jack it up from the engine, or suspend the bike, then hold it up with a chain/rope, suspended from the ceiling or some type of suspension rig.
Thanks again He Man!
hmm....
now i'm intrigued...
i kinda want to try and do it myself... but on the other hand, i would rather somebody else be responsible if i screw it up...
maybe once i get another bike, i'll give it a whirl on my current :D
^^ i know what you mean... and i wish i could just pay someone to do it if the price was reasonable since i dont really have a whole lot of free time anymore but the dealership around my area charges close to 700 for the 6k mile service and i really enjoy working on my own stuff when i have the time.
i just called my dealership about the 6k. they do belts and everything with it. he quoted me around $350 after everything.
i'll let them do it.

DOes that include shim swaps/valve adjustments? fluids? because i dont know how you can make money after that. Maybe thats just the price of it if the valves dont need adjustment?
