Title: Relay substitutes...does 5 pin work fine in 4 pin? Yes, and SOLVED!
Post by: kpdiamond on March 19, 2014, 02:42:06 PM
Recently I have been struggling with a totally dead bike when I key it up. (See my previous post) With some advice, thanks Thorn! I found at least 1 of 2 relays on the left of the battery tray to be faulty.  I reversed their positions and suddenly the ignition circuit came to life.  Reverse them back and I get back to having nothing.  Also when I shake the 1 faulty relay it sounds a little rattly, where the other does not.  I have another Question though...  I have been reading that NAPA relay AR634 is a suitable substitute, for my faulty V23073 Tyco relay.  But the OEM Tyco has 4 terminals, and the NAPA AR 634 has 5.  Many say the 5th terminal is "extra" and doesn't matter.  Anyone able to confirm this?  Again thanks DMF'rs for the tips!! My local NAPA has the relays, and pending an answer I may be kickstand up tomorrow!?!!!!

UPDATE,  Got the NAPA AR634 relays, plugged them in and now all is well.  This is definitely a frequent and easy problem to fix with parts available from most auto parts stores.  I'd suggest you start here for any issues at this price/ease...

Thanks, DMF members for the replies!  Got me going right on the first day of spring!!!!

I replaced some relays in my bike.  The originals were 4 pin but the rubber holders and sockets had an extra slot for 5 pins so it went right in.  The extra slot is just not wired anywhere so it doesn't change anything.  Some of the relays have a rubber cover on them that just peels off so they can fit.  I found a good price on some nice Tyco relays at Mouser IIRC.
