Just picked up a very nice 2007 S2R 1K.
It will only start in neutral and will not start in gear with kickstand up.
Problem is that if I kill it coming off a redlight or stop sign - I have to pull over and Get it into neutral to restart. Almost caused an accident the first time I rode it because of traffic trying to go around me as I was trying to get it into neutral while coasting.
Any ideas? Doesn't look like the sidestand wires were modded. If it thinks the kickstand is down it should die when I put it in gear right?
Thx for your help.
There is (should be) a little switch on the clutch lever pivot to allow starting in gear with the clutch lever pulled. It looks like the brake light switch on the other side. If it is not alligned properly, faulty, or it is missing or disconnected, the bike will only start in neutral, as you've described. Happened on my 620. Just had to get it aligned so the lever would actuate the little switch. Also, aftermarket levers sometimes do not have the provision to hit the switch. In that case a banjo fitting with a pressure switch for your clutch line will do the trick.
Does it have the OEM clutch master? If yes, then follow rule62 advice, if not then find the 2 terminals and "join" them together, this will act as if the micro-switch is working

And give you the ride of your life if you happen to start in gear.
Unbelievable - checked the clutch for the micro switch. It was indeed slightly disconnected. Fixed!
