Title: Camshaft specs
Post by: Tricknology on April 15, 2014, 12:51:59 AM
So, I'm at the point where I'm able to possibly do a bit of performance upgrades to my S4. I'm attempting to cobble together a DP kit clone with the DP header/ecu, Arrow high-mounts, and new (to me) cams.

My question is what difference(s), if any, is/are there between the DP race cams specifically for the '01-'02 S4 and the stock/performance cams for the 996?

Sadly, these days parts to fit a bike this old are hard to come by, and technical information (especially for the performance parts) seems to be even  more difficult to find.  [bang]

the s4 has a slightly shorter duration inlet cam than the 996 and other desmoquattro with the same exhaust cam, but any other cam to put in them is the same.  plenty of info.

you would want 996sps cams.

the dp cam set for 996 was 431/g, not so flash in a road bike.  the only kit offered for a monster was for the s4r afair, i don't recall there being a cam kit for the s4.  only a full system.

You know, one would think I'd have learned to think extra hard prior to posting while sleep deprived on my graveyard shifts at work. I had completely forgotten about your site and specifically the article about the S4. Don't I feel like a complete dunce.

The complete kit you mentioned here is what I'm thinking of trying to emulate.

I'm almost due for my 12k mile service, and figured if I have the pieces and the tech is fiddling around in the heads anyway, may as well have them put in the cams to "complete" the kit.

Considering my skill level riding and the cost/heartburn involved in tracking down 996 SPS cams, I may just elect to stick with my hacked airbox and the header/ecu and arrow cans, and go up a couple teeth on my rear sprocket instead.

Thanks for your reply Brad. Much appreciated.

If you're interested, there are Vee-Two corse cams on ebay.  Just happened to be browsing and came across them.

they're 748rs cams.  not a lot more duration than a 996sps, but quite a bit more lift.  i think aggressive would be a good way to describe the profile.  not valve train friendly if you rev it.

might work well in a street bike not going over 10.  doug's cam report has accel curves for them.

a good example of what is required to try to get a heavy 750cc twin to the front of the 600cc supersport pack.  and fail.

you'd need an ex to go with them.  sps or strada inlet
