Title: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: The ModFather on April 17, 2014, 07:40:17 PM I test drove the new Monster 1200 and loved it. But I really want it in Black and it only comes in Red and White right now. I'm thinking about getting a Streetfighter 848 in flat black (as I've been eyeing that bike for a while) and enjoying that until the 1200 comes out in black (which will probably be 2-4 years) then selling it and buying the Monster of my dreams. I should state I do have a heavily modded 2005 620 which I plan on keeping. (yes in a perfect world I'd keep the Streetfighter too and have all 3 but that will probably not be financially feasible). Thoughts?
Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: ab on April 17, 2014, 08:59:05 PM Street fighter is lone I would like to add to stable along with my triumph speed triple and 620 monster. I got to say the seat is comfy on the triumph :). Like you, I plan on keeping my 620 which is 10 years old this month since I got her. Good luck.
Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: brad black on April 18, 2014, 03:03:34 AM have you ridden a streetfighter? the seating position feels a lot higher and forward to me than a monster, although i haven't ridden a 1200 yet. plus the 848 will comparatively feel rather gutless compared to a 1200.
Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: Betty on April 18, 2014, 03:18:34 AM Thoughts? New bikes can be painted too and paint is available in black. Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: The ModFather on April 18, 2014, 05:08:59 AM I havent ridden the Streetfighter yet. I've read mixed reviews on it though and it took a sound beating from the Monster 1100 in this online Rags comparative shootout:
http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/features/122_1003_ducati_monster_1100_vs_streetfighter/ (http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/features/122_1003_ducati_monster_1100_vs_streetfighter/) The new Monster 1200 seems to be getting positive reviews across the board. As for power HP between the standard Monster 1200 and Streetfighter 848 is not that different although Torque and Weight will certainly make the new Monster a lot quicker. Either way I'm ending up with a Monster 1200 just debating on playing the field with the SF until I settle down. As for a paint job... I dunno ... to do it right will cost some serious coin and who knows how it will turn out. But I have been considering it. I'm kinda hoping when it does comes out in black they will add the Gear # to the display and smooth out the clutch issues so finding N doesnt take 5 minutes. Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: SpikeC on April 18, 2014, 06:55:58 AM There is not that much to paint on these puppies and good painters are easy to find, the clutch/neutral issue will go away with break in, and who needs a gear indicator? I worried about that when I went from a BMWK1200 RS to a R1100S and got over it!
Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: duccarlos on April 18, 2014, 08:01:39 AM I rode the SF 1098 and the ergos were pretty harsh. From what I understood the 848 was slightly better, but still a bit too sportsbike like for my taste. If you're looking for something in the SF 848 range, I would suggest looking at a Street Triple R as long as you don't mind the looks. Great engine and you can ride it all day.

Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: DarkMonster620 on April 18, 2014, 09:29:48 AM I've ride both a SF848 and SF1098 & SF1098S . . . the 848 is a bit more "civilized" and usable around town but ergos are still a "too aggressive", the 1098 just wants to be above 3500RPM . . . On Monday I'll get to 'test' ride the M1200S we got in so I will report, I'll try to make 3 short runs on each of the riding modes . . .
When taking it out of the transport cage, as I call them, it didn't feel heavy, it came out very easily, given I am alone at the shop . . so, on Monday evening I will be able to tell you somenthing Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: Povidius on April 18, 2014, 11:08:08 AM I have the 1200 S and I will tell you that is hands down THE most fun to ride monster I've been on! Its that good that I wouldn't really care if it only came in pink. The 848 is a nice bike but its about a 6.5/10 in terms of riding enjoyment where as I'd rate the 1200S a solid 9/10 (no bike is perfect but this comes close for me).
If you're deciding between the dark 848 and the red 1200 S, can I assume you're looking at making a purchase at socal motorcycles? They have both bikes on the floor. I was tempted to get the 848 as it was on sale but after riding the 1200S, they'd have to take another $5K off the 848 to make me choose it over the 1200 S. As others said, you can always paint the bike. I'm thinking I might do that anyway because I hate how the Ducati, Monster and 1200S logos are STICKERS on the bike and not painted over with clear coat. I don't see this lasting long... Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: Betty on April 18, 2014, 12:37:07 PM As for a paint job... I dunno ... to do it right will cost some serious coin and who knows how it will turn out. Of course there are other positives and negatives, but I would have thought buying a temporary bike would cost you some 'serious coin' as well. Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: SpikeC on April 18, 2014, 02:15:21 PM What's that word? Depreciation?
Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: DarkMonster620 on April 18, 2014, 02:20:18 PM Pricewise here in Panama, the SF848 and M1200 are very close[about $2K difference] . . . so, customers are having tough times deciding, by Wednesday I shall have the M1200 demo ready . . . Prepping 4 customer bikes first . . .
Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: Travman on April 18, 2014, 03:05:21 PM The 848 SF was awesome. I had no problems with the ergos. I did notice tha the exhaust pushed my heel out some, but I quickly adjusted. It made the Monster 1100 seem a little plain after riding them back to back.

I dunno ... to do it right will cost some serious coin and who knows how it will turn out. I know this guy in NH and can guarantee how the paint job will turn out. In fact I'd be willing to bet you'll be so happy that you'd be willing to pay more. Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: brad black on April 18, 2014, 06:28:18 PM while the peak power output may be similar, the 848 is 71% of the 1200 capacity wise, so will have about 71% of the peak torque. 30% less is a lot, and the 848 delivers it with rpm. they're quite nice with the lambda sensors turned off, but there's not much going on down low. wind it on, wait for it. they are very much an arse in the air kind of bike. my nuts don't like the loading into the tank so much.

Now it's Panigale + M1200.
Told me Thursday after only have the 1200 for less than a week "I don't even want my Panigale any more, the Monster is just more fun to ride." Now that said, it might be just new-shiny of it hasn't worn off to see any down sides, but still, a pretty powerful statement. Used to know the guy but forgetting the secret handshake, how are you gonna know now if you know the guy who knows the guys or just know the guy ??? :o :oThat's what happens when someone is infamous. ;D or famously infamous?Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: duccarlos on April 21, 2014, 05:16:31 AM buddy at work has 2 bikes, first it was 696 + Panigale. I keep hearing good things. Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: richard on April 22, 2014, 07:59:45 PM Its more like a 1098 sf vs. monster 1200.
Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: The ModFather on April 22, 2014, 08:34:25 PM Almost everyone I talked to and from what I've read the 848 SF although obviously not as fast as a 1098 SF Is a better ride in terms of control and across a variety of riding styles e.g. Urban, touring and sport. I've also heard the SF 1098 isn't happy in low gears and/or low RPM's. If I just wanted a fast track bike is get a Panigale. I think I'm just going to wait for the 1200 to come in black and save up for the S and Term is.
Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: SpikeC on April 23, 2014, 08:35:54 AM If I was in the market for a new bike that is what I would do! That is, if I could get them to throw in complementary valve adjustments!
Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: The ModFather on April 23, 2014, 06:45:00 PM I think I'm just gonna wait for a Monster 1200 in Black ... as that's what I really want. When you're paying that much you should get what you want. Hope the wait is less than 2 yrs and not over 4!! Although the MV Agusta Brutale Dragster is pretty dope!!!
Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: duccarlos on April 24, 2014, 06:45:08 AM Although the MV Agusta Brutale Dragster is pretty dope!!! +1 but note that the Dragster is an 800. I would not mind getting the 800 triple, but there's no replacement for displacement. Title: Re: Streetfighter 848 Vs Monster 1200 Post by: wabill on April 25, 2014, 01:46:12 PM Just test rode the new 1200S. What a powerful machine. It only had 12 miles on her so I didn't woop on her but she still went like a wild cat. Back to the shop with 34 miles on the odo now. I rode my 2006 S2R1000 to the shop and I also rode her home. I'd add the 1200 to the stable but wouldn't trade my "06" for her. The seating was fantastic and I'm sure I could easily handle 600-700+ mile road days on her. The power will be super scary terrific when she's broken in.

I worried about that when I went from a BMWK1200 RS to a R1100S and got over it! The frame would be the hardest part to paint. Kind of have to remove the engine to do that right. Personally, I would love to have a gear indicator. Is it necessary? No, of course not. But it is definitely nice to have and I have no idea why the top of the line Monster doesn't have it.
