Title: Cam shaft compatibility 916 sp to s4r 996
Post by: Metzis on April 23, 2014, 11:00:16 AM
Hey every body, currently i have open my motor in half because i am going to change crank con rods & half bearings, a half bearing twisted and made a big mess in there!!! i will borrow most part from a st4 916 engine eccept half bearings and con rod bolts these will be new.... To the subject now!!! I found four 916 sp cam shafts and i have already put them in my heads but i notice that the spots to place the belts back in are different. On the 916 sp head from the pulley side there are two spots on each cam shaft one for the vertical and one for the horizontal cylinder, these spots have 90 degrees deference more or less. On the s4r heads each camshaft has one spot in the middle more or less. I will use s4r's adjustable pulleys and cam shaft timing covers. The thing i did is to transfer the spots from sp's caps to s4r's timing caps with a marker by align the two covers is that enough? Do i have to do something more than that?

A picture or two would help a lot.

this is not my bike because i am not able to go to the work shop because of the work but same case here, first you see the 916 timing cap with there marks and in the second photo the ones from the s4r.

what i did is to transfer the spots for example on the horizontal cylinder the A timing point is the same between the 916 and the s4r but the b point of the s4r is different so i transfer the point to the c area.

This problem is caused because the Woodruff keys are placed in different angle between 916 sp's and s4r's camshafts.

If i didn't make my point tell me and i will try to go to the work shop today or tommorow to take few pics...

you have to use the s4r parts, as the heads are different.

fit the cams and make them work.  you have adjustable pullies, it can't be that hard.

AFAIK, the orientation of the woodruff key slot to the cam lobes is the same.

The ST4 and S4R have 'drop cam' heads, meaning the exhaust cams are in a different position from 916.

The cam alignment marks on the ST4/S4R heads are what you should use.

Thanks guys... I will do some testing and probably i am going to buy the gauges that messure lift just to be sure because after what happent i am must more skeptic about anything i do. That is not a reason of course to stop mess around with my engine but i whant to do everything as much as possible by "the book". During weekend me and my mechanic we will focus on this so as soon as i have any news about this or any other question i will back to you!!!
