Title: Do not ride without health insurance!
Post by: Enzoman on May 02, 2014, 09:46:58 PM
Even if your thinking about it, don't do it. Thanks to an idiot in a Mitsubishi Galant I now have somewhere around $175,000 in medical bills, I sort of lost count after the one huge bill from the hospital for $139,000. Although I'm not sure who's the idiot now, them for plowing into me or me for taking the long way home after work.

List of injuries-
Broken bones in foot
tibial plateau open reduction internal fixation (this means steel plate installed in leg and bone popped out)
Fractured Pelvis
Broken bones in hand and permanent dislocation
Fractured Clavical (two surgeries so far and steel plate installed, the first plate broke!)
Frozen Shoulder with limited mobility
Of course road rash and permanent scars

And also if this helps anybody be sure and call your insurance company as soon as possible and ad underinsured/uninsured motorist protection and get the maximum amount of coverage available. This really saved my ass to a certain extent because the driver of the car had the shittiest insurance known to man with only $15k in liability coverage. This is the state minimum you are allowed to have by law so guess what? I can guarantee you there are thousands of people driving around with coverage like that and its just a matter of time before the inevitable happens to someone else like me. This is a law that NEEDS to be changed for the love of god, the person was 19 years old and just got her license 4 months earlier and she is allowed to have this kind of insurance? Are you kidding me? Well thats the gist of it in a nutshell and I hope this will help my fellow riders out there in some way. If someone can help me upload pictures I would appreciate it, for some reason I can't get Flicker url's to work here. Thanks

Does she live at home? Was this part of her parents insurance? Get a lawyer and go after them if you can. You can also get a judgement against her that follows her until she pays it off.

Sorry to hear, priority #1 is to work on your recovery, money later.  Do follow hbliam's advice.  No insurance doesn't mean she has no money and she is responsible.  And, yep, everyone should make sure you have PIP coverage, particularly if you live in a state that is not no fault on injury or has poor coverage under no fault.

Anyway, to a speedy and complete recovery [shot]

The Lawyer did an asset search and had a private investigator do some covert ops and came up with nothing. They are a permanent resident on a campground and she works as a Walmart greeter or something  [thumbsdown] case closed.

Thanks for the reminder. I just checked mine.
Although I do have health insurance, and in my car insurance I have 250K/500K for uninsured/under-insured motorist, in my bikes I have 15K/30K from uninsured/under-insured motorist.
I have to remember to bump that up.
I have 250K/500K in all my policies, as far as liability to others.

Bills from the hospitals are ridiculous though. The usual dance is I saw in my bills:

Hospital: You owe me $100K
Insurance: Fuggetaboudit, I give you $30K
Hospital: Offer accepted :D

Try and get those numbers as high as you can even if it raises your premium a little every month it is worth it. My UIM protection was at $100k and I wish it was higher now. I have health insurance now but when this happened I had started a new job and I hadn't been there long enough to qualify for the plan so I had a short laps in health insurance between my old job and the new one. Of course I didn't elect to get the cobra coverage in-between because I thought "whats gonna happen in a month or two?" well that was a big mistake. So that is another thing to consider for anyone who is switching jobs, always always always have insurance!

You are assuming she will never have or marry money. Get the judgement and become a part of her life. Ten years later when her parents pass away and leave her a house...there you are.
