Title: No exhaust gasket??
Post by: memper on May 05, 2014, 11:02:46 AM
I've removed my exhaust system to do a wire brush cleaning and all that and when looking in my Haynes manual for reassembly I noticed they mention an exhaust gasket. I never noticed one when removing and just went in there to pick around and there was no gasket.

Never noticed any leaking or backfiring. I assume I should order new gaskets and the PO just didnt put them in there yes?

One other note: one of the nuts didnt come off and the stud came out. Soaked it in PB blaster for days and the nut still wont budge. I was just gonna install it as it came out with the nut frozen. Or should I stop being a tweed and get a new exhaust stud?

Get a new stud, and be sure to use the copper (or whatever) nuts from Ducati. I've never had one of those seize.

Are you sure there are no gasket remnants left? They get rather compressed and can look deceptively like they are part of the head .... (been there. done that ...)

replace ALL studs and nuts with either OEM ones or hardware store copper ones . . .

Used the ol mini torch and double nut method. All is well. Still gonna get copper nuts. Anyone know the size off hand?

As far as the gaskets are concerned I'd like to use them but I have heard that OEM ones stink. Beside the mess, why not copper or gray rtv?

*edit: after more reading even high temp copper rtv wont hold up long.

M8 nuts, X4 just ordered all those parts 'mself.

BTW I pitched the gaskets when I swapped exhausts in my M750 cuz they were nasty, continued with no gaskets after my 900ss swap, never a leak or an issue. YMMV I guess. But I did order new ones this time around.

Gonna stick with steel nuts. Looked up copper flange nuts in the size needed and $11 ea was the cheapest I found. o_0
Maybe my google-fu isnt that good...

I think they're a dollar each at the dealer.
