Title: The quest for a new motorbike...
Post by: Speed 3 Pilot on May 05, 2014, 02:25:43 PM
Stopped by SS BMW this morning to take a longer look at the S1000R...

At $16,448 OTD the bike is a bargain*.  The S1000R at South Seas is equipped with a very sophisticated electronics package that includes ABS, ASC, change on the fly ride modes and includes an optional quick shifter and DDC (similar to the electronic suspension on the HP4).

That said, I alternately sat on the bike, dismounted and walked around the bike checking out everything for about a half an hour.  It feels big and bulky to me in the showroom and at this point in time I just can't see myself hustling this thing up/down Tantalus...maybe I need a test ride... [evil]

*Note:  A Speed Triple R with Ohlins suspension, ABS and no other rider aids will run you approximately the same money and it's no where near the bike that the BMW is...maybe it's more of an older gentleman's ride... ;D

See, I thought the opposite. Sitting on the BMW in the showroom & moving it around I thought is was much lighter than mine & more compact. It's easy to ride the S1000RR up on Tantalus so I imagine the R would be too. Watched a few Street Triple test videos last night but they were all from 2007-2010. The press liked them then but that was before the last wave of streetfighter types. It used to beat the old Tuono V2.

not the latest, but probably the most inclusive of the naked bike comparos...

Sleight kink in my plans...with the SF almost sold, I find out that Cycle City has only one Speed Triple in stock (actually landing tomorrow) and it's an R ( [thumbsup]) in black ( [thumbsdown])...options at this point are to special order a white R* (takes about 3 weeks to get here), or buy the S1000R...decisions, decisions... ;D

*Note:  sales guy is checking on the price.

Your R12S is a beautiful bike dRB, but just not my cup 'o tea...

I'll be test riding the S-Triple when they have it ready (trying to get them to expedite picking it up and putting it together)...and, oh yeah, weather permitting, meeting Bill at 7:30 Sunday morning for a test ride on the S1000R... ;D

And you might be buying a new bike on Mother's Day. I bet that goes over real good.   [laugh]  Then again, if you've been extra good & nice lately, then that might be just fine.   [thumbsup]

Test rode and then bought the Speed Triple R ABS in black...gonna be a fun bike, maybe not Ducati Streetfighter fun, but fun none the less...arranged for payoff and pickup late next week, need to move the Duc as I really only have room for one bike...

Wow, just like that, [thumbsup], done deal!  No test ride with Bill then...

No run down Lagoon drive and back with Bill...

Had a good ride on the Speedy, up onto the freeway via that onramp off Puuloa, off at Camp Smith then on H1 again heading back...the two onramps are nice n curvy and the bike was sweet through them, no fighting back like the SF...sales guy let me lead and encouraged me ride some more, but I'd had a lengthy test ride 5 years ago and just wanted to get back and see if I could do a deal... ;D

During yesterday's test ride I thought the brakes were a bit spongy compared to the SF (both have Brembo monoblocks)...so before we called it quits, Jing and I stopped by Cycle City where I asked my sales guy if he would have the brakes bled before I take delivery.

After arriving home I did a Google search and came up with this from Sport Rider...

[The Speed Triple R’s brakes feel noticeably tamer than the 675R’s, be it because of the ABS plumbing or the added weight the naked bike carries over its sportbike sister. The first quarter-inch of pull is soft, but grab the brakes beyond that and you’ll have so much stopping power you won’t know what to do with it.  This brake package really is impressive, with great power and enough feedback from the lever to make stoplight-to-stoplight riding a one-finger chore./i]

ain't the interweb great... [thumbsup]

So, desmotropic now has the Red Baron on a German bike, Fighter Pilot on a British bike?

Add a Honda and a hog and you can do a WW II reenactment.

Mike, the Navy Lt, was supposed to pick up the SF this afternoon but his loan check from USAA is not here yet.

The check was to be overnighted on Monday but USAA needed a copy of the front and reverse of the title in order to release the check.  I only provided the front to Mike which he sent to them.  So USAA held up on forwarding the check, but didn't let Mike know why...they just left us hanging in the wind.

Mike is going to give me a $1000 cash deposit this afternoon and he has verification that the USAA loan check is on it's way, so I will be taking delivery of the Speedy R tomorrow morning...if worse comes to worst, I'll have a 2014 Speed Triple R and a 2010 Ducati Streetfighter in my garage for my riding pleasure...;)

Given that I'm still smiling from Sunday's ride on the Hyper I definitely know the next bike has to be fun-fun-fun.

Not that the R12S isn't fun, it is. But it's not naturally hooligan fun.  [evil]  You have to work more to get that and the fact that you have to work it a bit takes away from that fun.

So here's the list as it stands, and, I know, everyone has their favorites. Me too. It all depends on selling the R12S and if it doesn't sell then this is all academic.

KTM Superduke 1290R  ---- BMW S1000R ---- Ducati Hypermotard 1100S ( got to find those used ) --- Ducati Streetfighter --- KTM 990 SMR ( another rare one ) --- Ducati Hypermotard SP ( with the 821 4 valve ) -- BMW S1000RR  --- Aprilia RSV4 or Tuono --- Yamaha R1 ( 2015 )

They all have their good & bad points.
