Title: remove wet clutch from 620ie without special tool how?
Post by: cmejia1978 on May 08, 2014, 06:08:04 AM
hi there! I have a kind of a "brand new" wet clutch sitting on a shelf to replace my 20,000kms or more (have no gauges since 9,000kms), but I am stuck without the special wet clutch holder, any advice? can I make it without it? thanks!  [popcorn]

I used an impact wrench on mine & did not have any issues.  When torquing it back down I put the bike in gear & had a friend hold the rear brake.

You plates should still be fine after only 20k kms.
I put a good *used* set of plates in my M750 20k miles ago, and they're still good.

Unless the basket or hub are damaged, all you would need to do is swap the plates.

No special tools necessary for that.

Is it slipping or otherwise not performing properly?

Will the dry clutch holder work with wet clutches? http://www.amazon.com/Ducati-Clutch-Basket-Holder-Tool/dp/B006M59FJO (http://www.amazon.com/Ducati-Clutch-Basket-Holder-Tool/dp/B006M59FJO)

And what solvent should I be using to clean the basket and the securing nut? I plan on doing the loctite thing.

The dry clutch tool will work with the non-APTC wet clutched.

Values have been redone, don't remember from top of my head but it's a lot more than before . . .

I'll give you the value tomorrow and what chemical agent to use

Unless you're just itching to replace, I would leave it.  My M750 has 37,000 miles and counting on its original clutch.

What about for APTC clutches? This tool? http://ca-cycleworks.com/mp08-0008-p518 (http://ca-cycleworks.com/mp08-0008-p518)

APTC hub is two pieces, the outer that has the teeth to engage the steels has a flange on the outboard end.
So that tool won't fit.

That tool does work well on the regular wet and dry clutches.

Don't know if this helps, but below is the APTC clutch (1) assembled, (2) with factory tools installed and nut removed, (3) parts off bike.

Thank you all! the things is that when I change gears it does a loud "TACK" sound and also sometimes, not all the time but every 2-3 days when I am going home, maybe at 120-130km/h and shift from 4 to 5 it will slip and I have to lower the speed to engage again the 4th...  [thumbsdown]

My APTC wet clutch is particularly sensitive to oil type.  Even within a given weight + moto-specific group it matters.  I've consistently had the best CLUTCH performance with Mobil-1 Racing 4T 10W-40, so that's the only oil I use.

Agree on this one. I switched once to a 15W-50 and clutch started to slip in higher revs. Took me 2 oil changes with 10W-40 to have it back to normal. I don't notice difference between Mobile-1 or Shell advance. At this moment I use Fuchs Silkolene 10W-40 with good clutch performance.

I've been using Repsol Moto 4T Synthetic in 10W40 and never had issues . . .

Thanks for the pics! Definitely helps for reference. Can I ask which solvent you used to clean it? Brake cleaner ok?

read in my recent thread about 'rock hard clutch lever' on techniques to remove/retorque the clutch hub nut.  no special tools other than a 2x4.

Be smarter than me when reinstalling the spring bolts or you'll snap some of them off.

Clean it??  That's the natural look after wiping down.  Regular oil changes self clean internally!

Well, I'm going to be doing the wet clutch securing nut thing with red loctite. I figure I would want the thread surface cleaned

Yes, you definitely want to degrease and dry the threads of both parts prior to Loctite application and also give ample time for curing.  Any old volatile no-residue cleaning solvent will do, such as brake cleaner.  For the record the factory procedure calls for grease and not Loctite, but these nuts have a habit of backing off.  I found mine little more than finger tight when I went in the first time.  I described the Loctite method that I used somewhere in an "s2r 800 clutch" thread if I remember correctly.  I made my adhesive selection after reviewing numerous product sheets and talking to some technical people at Henkel/Loctite.  It's held up well so far...
