Title: 2013 Monster 796- stalling while driving
Post by: ssrealty on May 14, 2014, 06:10:43 PM
My Monster 796 stalled while driving just before an intersection. Engine shut down suddenly. I called Ducati Roadside. Bike has only 1,800 miles. 600 Mile service done a few months ago. Check out link below when I was on side of road:

Has anyone else had this problem? It was a little scary. Any ideas?

Had a similar issue but with another bike, the issue was the APS or Electronic Throttle Control, but, this bike has a cable throttle control, could be the TBs since the MIL is ON.

Did you experience the stall while you were riding? I think I was shifting gears and under load coming to an intersection, and the bike just shut off immediately. It was not gradual. Engine shut off.

On another occasion, I remember the bike not wanting to start when hot after riding a while. After turning key off and waiting a few minutes, engine ran fine again. Never did it stall when riding???

you have the check engine light on my friend.. a code read will tell you.

go into your menu and see what it says on the dash... look on the batt menu.. if it says LO or HI, i think it's your regulator/rectifier on the out - but could be other things...

2013?  Under warranty?  Take it back to the dealer.

Clearly, the bike is trying to tell you something. Listen.

My monster was towed to Ducati dealership this morning by Ducati Road Service under warranty. Anxiously waiting for response on codes and problem.

Spoke to Ducati dealer. They said the Monster had a bad TPS switch. This makes sense- I had similar problem on an old car with a mechanical Bosch fuel injection system. Car would stall intermittently when coming to stop.

Part is on order and should be here in a few days.....Said it would only take a few minutes to install new part.

Ducati still not repaired. TPS switch was replaced yesterday. Now am ECU is on order. It has been over two weeks now. Is this normal to have bike in shop this long? This is my first warranty service.

You are not having the greatest experience, so much is in the hands of the dealer.  FWIW when I've had to order parts up here in Canada a couple of times they have been shipped from Italy and at the dealership in just a few days... it's amazed me how fast it is.  Might be time to get a little ugly?  Contact DNA directly?  Never had to call them but I've read that they are responsive.

Where are you (not in your profile ???) and what is the lemon law in that state? In many states, after 30 days you get a buyback and $$$ for the loss of use..., and/or an entirely new bike/vehicle. That should light a fire under somebody!

I have owned the Ducati 796 since November and have less than 2,000 miles. Supposedly, ECU should be in tomorrow. We will see. Patiently waiting.

I also signed up months ago for the Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic this weekend in Elgin, Tx. I live in Austin area. I sure hope the Ducati is ready....I can ride my backup motorcycle- a 2005 FJR 1300. But it won't be as much fun. This is my sport touring bike. My wife rides the FJR with me.

ECU came in. However, I had to drop off the second key so the keys could be updated with new ECU (and TPS). They were test riding late today. Hope bike is ready tomorrow. Three weeks is too long!

Picked up Ducati today. Drove about 50 miles with no problems.

Also, I purchased some Ducati Diavel mirrors for the Monster 796. Now I can see behind me, and they vibrate much less. If you have not made this upgrade, I highly recommend it. I think the Monster 1200 has same mirrors.

Good news! We'll keep our fingers and toes crossed!  ;D

Had noticed those mirrors on the 1200 too but couldn't tell from the snaps whether they extended any farther. Another inch? Do they mount with the same bolts? How much $$$?

I actually had the mickey mouse mirrors with the 20th anniversary model. So, I ordered bolts and brackets.

Thanks. I'd forgotten that they had the old "lollipops". Was looking at a local rider's EVO last weekend, but he'd already changed them. He told me that they came with no bikini fairing either, which I find actually works pretty well at speed. The chrome headlight ring also bothers him and he mentioned that he might plasti-dip it. If he swaps that out though, I might try it on my "Pantah" as it's silver-blue already!  ;) http://gallery.leica-users.org/d/383062-1/M+796_10S_LM-Pantah_C01S+_1200x800_.jpg (http://gallery.leica-users.org/d/383062-1/M+796_10S_LM-Pantah_C01S+_1200x800_.jpg)

Maybe my perches will work them. The parts manager at my dealer is really on-the-ball, so I might give him a ring and see whether the Diavel mirrors fit my perches and whether they'd actually improve the view! The stock mirrors are ~ 50/50 "elbow" but are actually super-quiet vs the lollipops on my Triumph T-100. (Those have a good view at 70 MPH the wind noise is like a hurricane compared to the stock 796...) http://gallery.leica-users.org/d/353092-1/Workshop-T-100.jpg (http://gallery.leica-users.org/d/353092-1/Workshop-T-100.jpg)

Are the SF mirrors the same as my 796 items or are they any longer? They look very similar but it's hard to tell from the pictures.

The Diavel mirrors are awesome. For the first time, I can see cars behind me, and no vibrations at normal speeds.

Both the OEM plastic mirrors and the mickey mouse mirrors terrible. The Diavel mirrors have a metal shaft, and I think they extend farther. This significantly reduces the vibrations.

If you have not made this upgrade, you are missing out!

And, I have now driven about 150 miles with no stalling issues. Keeping my fingers crossed.

basically teh same length, main diff is the mounting where the screw goes . ..  in Monsters is a little thicker than on SF . . .I'll try to get a pick tomorrow at the shop of teh two mirrors, OK?

edit:
