hey guys
proud owner of a 98 monster 400 that i bought last month...live in Japan...so thats why I went for the 400! spent the last month bringing her back to life as the last owner , who lived in the cold north, rarely rode her and didnt look after her ( only 10,000 kms on a 98!!! )
anyway... i have a vespa and am quite competent at mechanics ( you have to be with a vespa, there isnt literally a month that goes by without something going wrong with it ) and was wondering how interchangeable are parts?
for example, would sr2 wheels fit a 98 monster?
sr2 swingarm on a 98 monster?
a 696 or bigger engine will fit in a 400? ( 696/900 engines for some weird reason turn up for sale on jap auction sites quite often at really reasonable prices! )
with a vespa, its really really easy to tell what works and what doesnt but dukes are new to me so any help would be greatly appreciated
mike
Welcome to the Forum!
You could put a 900 motor in. High comp pistons and flatslides really get them going. You could sell the 400 and buy a 900 and work it.
Going to Single Sided Swingarm will be quite involved, and there are threads you can search to see just how involved it is.
hi and thanks for the reply
i really like the wheels from the single swimgarm models...but maybe a little too much work for me...
will the 900 engine slot in easily? any other mods required?
thanks for taking the time to help me out
mike
m900 engine ( no carbs etc.. ) 20k kms...250 dollars.... cheap!!!
Someone will have to verify, but I think the carbed frames are generally the same up to 2000-2001.
Your jetting will take some work and and I would consider other mods you have in mind before the motor goes in like a light flywheel, painting the outer engine cases, etc.
the pre nouvo (pre 696/796/1100) monsters are split into two main groups.
888 frame: all 2v up to and including 2001, have the hoop style rear suspension.
st frame: all 4v, all 2v 2002 onwards, have the angled pushrod style rear suspension.
the main compatibility issue is rear suspension or swingarm. apart from that, everything fits into everything, except where it doesn't. some of it you will find out by frustration, some by asking and listening, and some by asking and ignoring and working out for yourself that you should have listened.
all good fun.
thanks guys
I have a 98 m400 so i think that is the 888 frame then , judging by the rear suspension
in the winter i am going to strip the bike, get the frame and wheels powder coated and it looks like a larger engine is going to go in as well! I had big trouble when i put a big carb on my vespa, float bowl , needle size etc... i wish it had been as easy as jetting!
let the games begin!
