Title: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: ashes to ashes on May 19, 2014, 11:57:02 PM Hi,
I am a proud Australian soldier, but unfortunately after deployments have been diagnosed with PTSD. My PTSD causes extreme anxiety when I enter a public environment nightmares/ terrors which medication hasn't helped. Therefore I have been issued with a companion dog. But this creates a difficulty as I either have to buy a car or a side car for my bike to be able to transport my dog with me wherever I go. I have a 2008 monster S2R 1000, I've been looking for one for my bike but it looks like I have to get one custom made. Because I'm a soldier I'm not flush for cash and can't fork out $3000+ does anyone know of a work around that might be financially easier for me? [bang] [bang] [bang] Thank you in advance, Ash. Search forum and YouTube for Pugglepod.

Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: ashes to ashes on May 20, 2014, 01:59:56 PM The dog is a medium sized dog she's about the size of a staffy, 20kg's

I think i'll have to sell my bike to buy he sidecar for it! But all jokes aside I think I'll just have to sell the bike [puke] [puke] [puke] [puke] [puke] [puke] [puke] [puke] [puke] [bang] [bang] [bang] [puke] [puke] [puke] [puke][puke] [puke] [puke] [puke] [puke]

This is the aforementioned PugglePod 9000: (http://i.imgur.com/7QmRgFR.jpg?1) I would think someone down under could whip up something like that for not so much money. Doesn't need to have the fancy body on it, something more basic will do the job. Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: Rudemouthsky on May 20, 2014, 05:52:16 PM That thing doesn't look very safe to me...
Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: Rob Hilding on May 20, 2014, 06:16:46 PM Looks safe in the video, and well built in the photo.
IIRC the designer/build posted some more details Hope you can find a way to keep you bike and transport your companion [thumbsup] [Dolph] Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: Grampa on May 20, 2014, 07:39:34 PM Ural is always the answer
Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: ashes to ashes on May 20, 2014, 09:07:17 PM the puggle pod looks fantastic but I can't find anyone who wants to make one. I can't believe I'm going to have to give up my ride I have wanted to own a Ducati since I was a child and now I have one I don't ever want to let it go...
Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: Speeddog on May 20, 2014, 09:21:08 PM Hang on for a bit, let me talk to some people.
This is not making a MotoGP bike. Are you sure your dog will be OK with riding in a sidecar? Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: stopintime on May 20, 2014, 09:40:50 PM Ventura rack with a sturdy bag?
Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: ashes to ashes on May 20, 2014, 11:16:39 PM ventura rack was an idea I had but it's illegal. Speeddog They are a fully trained service dog so they're trained to do anything I want. They have to pass the same test as a guide dog, but on top of that mine will also be trained to do room clearances, wake me up from nightmares, detect my anxiety levels and more.
Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: herm on May 21, 2014, 03:50:18 AM I second the Ural idea..
Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: ashes to ashes on May 21, 2014, 03:06:12 PM Ural is always the answer I feel a little apprehensive about ural as I've not heard of them before and am unsure of their reliability, serviceability and rideability Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: stopintime on May 21, 2014, 03:34:21 PM ventura rack was an idea I had but it's illegal. ........... How so? If it isn't 'certified' for the dog's weight, maybe the principle could be used constructing a better version... FWIW, the rack can be turned around so the bag is on top of the passenger seat. Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: beethoven on May 21, 2014, 03:42:32 PM Ural is definitely an option. Been in Oz for years. I have been in sidecar once. Attached a link to site.
I have also seen a dog in a milk crate attached to a rack in Perth. I believe new rules ban unrestrained animals on motorbikes. Too many riding on the tank. Unsure if you could get exemption for your case if restrained. Good luck with finding a good outcome. http://www.imz-ural.com.au (http://www.imz-ural.com.au) Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: Grampa on May 21, 2014, 04:15:13 PM I feel a little apprehensive about ural as I've not heard of them before and am unsure of their reliability, serviceability and rideability if you own a screwdriver and a set of spanners, and can use them without removing an eye... you are capable of servicing one all on your own. riding on a Ural is quite calming, and IMO, the perfect vehicle for somebody with PTSD. it forces you to slow down and enjoy the little things. cats, dogs, babies and hot chicks all dig them ;) https://vimeo.com/34232982 Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: IZ on May 22, 2014, 03:16:02 AM look up pet trailers for motorcycles
http://www.roaddogtrailers.com/trailers_K9_Caddy.asp (http://www.roaddogtrailers.com/trailers_K9_Caddy.asp) Here's a custom one for a Duc http://www.ducatinewstoday.com/2011/08/forget-the-top-box-tow-a-trailer-with-your-ducati/ (http://www.ducatinewstoday.com/2011/08/forget-the-top-box-tow-a-trailer-with-your-ducati/) I used to ride for 3 years with my Pug in crate. cats, dogs, babies and hot chicks all dig them ;)[/quote] well with that logic how can i say no? haha the dog is a large staffy size, about 20kg. I do like the ural idea they also have the same problem of needing extra finance which I don't have though. Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: Grampa on May 22, 2014, 05:47:32 PM i would look for a used "T" model. most owners baby them, and even it its not been babied.... they handle wear and tear nicely. here in the states, used ones can be found at quite a discount over that of a new one.
Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: Speeddog on May 22, 2014, 06:47:09 PM As I understand it, the Ural is a Russian copy of a postwar BMW.
Given that, as long as it's had oil kept in it, and barring large-caliber gunfire, it should be good to go. Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: RichD on May 29, 2014, 02:38:41 AM Hi all!
-just saw this awesome thread! [thumbsup] Ashes, I think the Ural is a GREAT idea, especially in respect to keeping to a low cost. The biggest downside to it (to me) is it doesn't lean when you turn. That's really not that bad! The Pugglepod9000 is fully articulated, made of aircraft grade chromoly tubing, carbon fiber, and fiberglass so it would lean when turning, and will withstand over 8000 pounds of force before a pivot point will fail. (It costs a lot extra to make it look like it is marginally attached while having a large strength safety factor) Maybe you could get a Ural and try it too see how it works for you? Title: Re: Sidecar for Veteran's companion dog Post by: RichD on May 29, 2014, 02:49:09 AM That thing doesn't look very safe to me... It is safe. Very. That's the trick to it! ;) Make it look as "unattached" as possible, while having ridiculous extra strength built in.
