Title: Track/hack job Post by: HotIce on May 25, 2014, 06:51:35 AM So I finally received my 2012 1199 with Termis and 4000 miles. Bike sounds basically new, from a mechanical and looks POV.
But, she has seen some track, I guess, from tape on wheel weights and some "hack", more than "track", jobs. I believe the mess in the heat exchanger bolts is silicone to prevent them getting off. Nevertheless, it looks like $hit :-\ (http://i60.tinypic.com/20qnhmx.jpg) Have anyone seen such wacko use of silicone to keep bolts from getting out? There is more. Since the Pani oil filter cover can be a *itch to get off, and since the previous owner seemed to be in love with silicone, he stuck a screw on it, so you can pull it back directly, w/out having to pry it out with picks. While I admire his inventiveness, I puke on the end result. NO words for such fine artwork [puke] [puke] [puke] Have you started the bike? Does it leak oil? You say it sounds "new" Have you riden her? If yes, how does she feel? I know "we" are to use black silicone only, Threebond brand preferably, but, this might be hiding something . . . I have ridden her some yesterday, and it felt perfect. Will ride much more today. BTW, the ones who say that the 1199 is a PITA to ride in traffic, have never ridden a 748 or a 1098 ;D Also, leaks, would call for a different placement of silicone, instead of just wrapping bolts. I might replace the oil filter cover, if that turns out to deprive my sleep at night. Wonder how to get rid of the silicone red mess in the heat exchanger, if I wanted to ... Spray with Brake/Parts Cleaner and using a "clock worker" or precision screwdriver try to pry it, slowly, that's how I do it . . . Another method I use, if silicone is way too stubborn, I will damp it with some gasoline . . . Title: Re: Track/hack job Post by: Triple J on May 26, 2014, 09:37:31 PM RTV (the red silicone) is commonly used to keep certain bolts (like chain adjustment bolts on a DSS) from backing out...or to mark bolts so you can visually see if they've backed out. I've never seen them completely covered like that though! [laugh]

But the RTV there would be so it doesn't leak (as much). Don't mess with that one unless it starts to leak, or you're ready to do an oil and filter change and have a new cover in hand.
