Title: triple clamp compatibility for 2011 796
Post by: aftriathlete on May 26, 2014, 05:55:23 PM
I'll find out tomorrow whether or not I'm going to be able to use a fix-a-thread on my lower triple tomorrow -- using a torque wrench set to the exact specification in the service manual I stripped out one of the threads on the lower triple.  It suffices to say that this whole ordeal has been a disaster, but I'll get to the point.

So first question: are the Ducati Service Manual torque specs for dry bolts?  Why would they give you torque specs for dry bolts when the service manual tells you to use grease/loctite on them?  If this is the case, then a quick google search tells me that the difference between wet and dry torque is something like 20-25%, which means I would be over-torquing everything by 20-25%.

Second question: what triple clamp setups are compatible with my bike?  The top triple is good, so the lower triple has to fit a 53 mm fork leg and I believe I need a 30 mm offset.  I just don't know what of the older model year bikes will fit as I start looking on Ebay.

the manual specifies if you must use grease or loctite . . .

I'll check tomorrow and let you know . ..

Maybe I explained myself poorly, I was pretty frustrated at the time (still am, but cooled down a bit).  I am using the manual-recommended grease or loctite on all the bolts (moly grease, in this case), but I'm wondering if the manual torque specifications are for dry bolts despite the fact that most bolts they recommend either grease or loctite.

On top of that, compatibility of other models' triples for my Ebay searching.

Thanks man.

Perfect, that's exactly what I needed.  Thanks man.  Hopefully it doesn't come to buying a new one, but I'm not holding my breath that the helicoil is going to work.

It's an M8, don't remember top of my head if 1.00 or 1.25 pitch . . .

M8x1.25 from looking up the part number.  I got that exact helicoil tonight at Advanced, but it basically makes a 10 mm hole that you put the helicoil into, so the question is whether or not there's enough aluminum around the bolt hole to support taking out another mm all around.
