Title: Slightly "Bent" Rim
Post by: redwoods7 on July 10, 2008, 10:53:59 AM
 :(

So, Took the bike in to get new tires on (Pirelli Diablo Strada) for my weekend in the mountains, and I get the finger point to "follow me" back to the garage -- never a good sign.  So, my front wheel is very slightly out of true, maybe less than 1/8 of an inch, there 's a slight wobble detectable in one spot.  I've never noticed it before -- and don't remember having a big noticeable hit recently.  They balanced the tire, and the tech said he'd just ride it, but gave me the disclaimer about safety and couldn't guaranty the integrity of the wheel.  So, I don't want to replace this wheel and don't have the cash to do it now.  He suggested that I just watch the spot for any cracks developinig.  Is this a major safety issue?  Can I continue to ride?  Thanks for any input.

you can ride with a bent rim and not know, if its balanced, i doubt youd ever feel it unless you were pushing the limits on the cornering or top speed. You can get it repaired too or buy a set of stockers for a few hundred.  What bike do you have?

those can be had for a few hundred bucks for a whole set if u keep your eyes peeled but take your wheel to someone, they can more often then not true it.

One of the stock wheels on my '87 Paso was bent enough to not hold air. I took it to a local guy who has a fancy $5000+ machine and he straightened it for $75. I haven't had an issue with since.

They do good work. I've had a few different wheels done by them all look/work great.
