Title: Storing fuel
Post by: Monsterlover on June 15, 2014, 08:33:35 PM
I have one of those blitz fuel cans with the yellow snap open vent.

I keep it all sealed but when its hot out fuel likes to spray out when I crack open the vent or the lid containing the pour spout.

Is there a better way?  Is it safe to leave the vent open?

I like my tiny garage. Its all I've got for the time being and I'd like to not burn it down.

IMO, I would not leave the vent open.  Liquid gasoline is not so much the flammable.  The fumes, on the other hand make the big flames.

IME, as long as the door is open and you do not smoke or light candles around said spewing gas can, the biggest worry is the spousal unit claiming that you stink when you come back inside.

I'm not a chemist and I can't prove it but I'm convinced by experience that gas stored in plastic gas cans or plastic fuel tanks breaks down and becomes useless about 10 times faster than gas stored in a steel container.  I keep mine in steel gas cans.  No vents to pop open either.  Of course, plastic has an advantage that it doesn't rust.

I don't seem to have an issue storing it in plastic. Its mostly for the lawn mower.

The reason I get hosed all the time is that I open it up to drain the fuel from the float bowl on my 450ktm

My preference is to keep it closed up.

I think it depends on the plastic.  Modern EPA approved should be fine.  Well, for storage, we know about PEX tanks [bang]

Leave some room for expansion in the warmer moths.  Gasoline comes out of the pump at ground temperature.  Heats up in your shed or garage?  Expansion.
