Hi all,
What should I look for or what I should do to get the bike running in this potential buy?
2012 Monster 696 ABS roughly 12k miles. Been sitting in garage for a year! Tag said 5/13.
Initial look:
1. Chain rusted
2. Some rust on the fork tube. I used my nail and scratched it, it came off.
3. Overall pretty dirty.
4. The foot pegs and similar part have oxidation. But I guess I can polish it correct?
5. No tip over or whatsoever and check the steering stops are good.
So I wanted to know what you suggest first thing I need to do to get it going?
Rough idea I have is
1. Drain the gas (if any). New gas
2. New plugs
3. New oil and filter
4. New chain and sprockets
5. New battery
Probably.
1. New belts,
2 Check valves too?
Anything else?
If it's been sitting, I'd flush the clutch/brake fluid and check/change the air filter while you're at it. Any idea of the service history? Sounds like it wasn't well cared for, so I'd definitely check the valves and (probably replace) the belts, too.
Thanks!
Yeah definitely fluids as well forgot to mention that lol.
Be sure it's priced accordingly. Most people don't put a price on their time. Especially if you have to put a lot of work and money to get it back on the road.
so took the bullet...Picked up the bike without starting (just looked at the overall).
Ads said 12k miles for a 2012 M696 (kinda oddly high at first for me).
What I found:
rusted bolts everywhere due to the owner used to live near the beach (Galveston) = lots of vinegar [laugh]
rusted fork tub (maybe 2-3 inches up from the fork legs)...I addressed this using Scottbright pads and wd40
rusted front rotors
rusted chain and sprockets
What I did:
taken all the rusted bolts I could out and clean it (replace if necessary)
cleaned rotors and forks but the rotors are bad :'(
replaced chain and sprockets
changed oil and filter.
and new battery cuz the old one junk
>>>>she started right up...and guess what...only 4000 miles (not 12k as ads)
about the price, got it for $2500 so I consider I found a good deal. Just few cosmetic here and there, but that I can upgrade later.
I nominate you as DEAL KING!! though not qutie sure how much work you did to get that price!
I didn't much actually lol.
The guy was asking for $3000 but when I called and talked to him, he said if I can come up with the money within 3 days, he willing to sell for $2500. So I picked it up the next day LOL.
Iirc Monsterparts and MWheels sell stainless bolt kits. Boy do they make a difference to the bikes appearance.
Red flag with the 4k on the odometer. Was he the original owner? I find it hard to believe someone could make a mistake like that on the mileage. Were the sprockets worn or just rusty? I'd still recommend checking the valve clearances and timing belts.
I have a 2012 Monster 1100 EVO with 15,000 miles on it and I've seen one advertised locally with 17,000 miles on it so 12k miles is definitely not out of the realm of possibility.
I went and looked at a few used Multistradas with a friend of mine who was in the market to buy and we found a number of them had odometer fraud.
the guy was the original owner (i.e. title in his name-paid off recently, Ducati's CArd under his name, etc.)
I checked the belt and it looking good. Can't comment on the valves cuz I haven't check.
Sprockets are worns, but not too bad. At 4000 miles it's time to replace anyways correct?
Mistake or not I can't tell, but he seem like he doesn't care about the bike and just want to get rid of it.
Odometer Fraud on the newer models (that's interesting)? How possible?
Yeah SS bolts are tasty LOL

Well, if the chain was rarely or never adjusted the sprockets will wear out sooner, but man, I'm still on the original sprockets on my bike. I replaced the chain at 12k miles due to a few tight spots. I can't imagine needing sprockets at 4,000 miles.
2007-2009 Ducati Multistrada. We found 3 locally that the owners told mileage was x,xxx but we found bikes had been registered in other states and when it changed ownership it had higher mileage reported to DMV than what was on the bike currently (one was at a Ducati dealer). I think all it takes is swapping the gauge cluster off a bike with lower mileage. If you have stock bike with OEM CPU it might be more difficult. Not sure on that.
You definitely got a good deal but if it does have more miles than indicated on the odometer, and it sounds like it might, I'd definitely check those valves.
I would change the belts when you check the valves. No matter the mileage, the belts have been sitting in less than desirable conditions and need to be changed. A rusty bolt might look bad, but a bad belt can look good then break and your great deal is suddenly a major disaster.
Very good discussion and advise. Thanks all

For peace of mind.
I've seen belts that look ok on the pulleys, but when taken off and folded over in your hands, cracks appeared. They are probably the original belts and over two years old.
