I'm in the process of re-mounting my swingarm after I got my replacement engine swaped out with the one I exploded. If anyone is a DSS guru, your help would be much appreciated.
To sum up what the maintenance manual says, you place each of the two 1.8 mm thick shim washers against the crank cases then fit the swingarm and measure free play on the right side. (#9 in the picture below.) You then shim the right side using 0.1 and 0.2 mm thick shims so that your free play is 0.1 mm or less.

I did this and measured with a feeler gauge about 0.75 mm of free play. This puzzles me because 1) this seems like a lot and 2) this swingarm used to fit to my last engine with two 0.2 mm shims, which means I need to buy about two more.
Does anyone know where to get these shims??? I haven't asked the dealer yet (2.5 hrs away from me).
The dealer can order them for you, or you might try our sponsor OEMDucati.com or a large dealer like Omaha Ducati or Commonwealth. I would think a local machine shop could make you a set too. I don't think the metallurgy is critical as long as you don't use cheese, though rust resistance is a good idea. Maybe Speeddog can chime in.
These are the part numbers:
852.1.001.1B Shim th. 1.8
852.1.002.1B Shim th. 0.2
852.1.003.1B Shim th. 0.1
i wish my swingarm looked that clean!!
Just shim it as the manual says.
Both the swingarm and the cases wear, so they do need reshimming over time.
At 0.75mm, you'll need 3 of the 0.2 and 1 of the 0.1.
Sandwich the 0.1 between two 0.2's, put those in, and see if you can get the last 0.2 in.
You'll likely need to wiggle the swingarm a bit.
Thanks. You guys are awesome.

How did you know this?
Also, another question I have is about the grease specified in the manual. How important is the exact type? They specify "Grease D," which is SHELL Retinax HD2. What I have on hand is Super Tech Multi-Duty Complex Grease. This stuff:

Does it make a difference? First time with any kind of project of this caliber, just trying to do it right.

That's a pic from the manual. Mine's black but just as clean now since I took the opportunity to clean it while it's off the bike! Soaked it with WD40 and scrubbed with a toothbrush. Looks awesome!
that grease should work fine, one thing I learned early on working on bikes is dont over think, it causes you unnecessary worry
oh you can get washer/shims at the local hardware (lowes or home depot) easy peasey [beer]

Not the ones in this town! The shim washers I have measure outer diameter: 35.9 mm; inner diameter: 20.5 mm; and thickness 0.2 mm. Pretty sure the Lowes here would scoff me if I walked in there asking for that! :'( Granted it's pretty much the inner diameter that matters most, but the swingarm shaft measures pretty much exactly 20.05 mm +/- 0.05 mm all the way across.

Downloaded. Thanks. The one I had with my maintenance manual was in Italian even when you selected English.
