Title: Help anyone, my gas tank leaks lots gas the small (looks like an overflow tube)
Post by: hrharb on July 08, 2014, 04:51:46 PM
[bang] I took my gas tank off to have a small repair painted. I taped and marked all the tubes . Two seem to be overflow or breather tubes, one is larger and one smaller. They drain to the bottom of the bike. The other two tubes seem to be gas delivery tubes. This is a 2001 Monster Corsa we are talking about. After i secured all the hoses and the tank,  I rode down to the gas sanction filled the tank. Lots of gas started leaking from under the bike. Very dangerous, could get toasted, torched and so could the bike. I moved the bike away from the filler pump, the leak stopped. Because I had just re-mounted the tank, I thought one of the tubes might be poorly attached. When I lifted the tank to check, more gas started pouring out again. I lowered the tank and it stopped leaking. I was very concerned about riding with a fuel leak and gas on the bike. So I waited, pushed the bike away from the gas station. No more leaking. I waited for the bike to cool. I pulled the two breather hoses to the side of the bike, so they would not leak onto the exhaust and so I could watch them. At this time I didn't know where the gas leak was coming from. And it was a serious amount of gas coming out. No more leaks however, while the tank was in its normal position no leaks, I tried lifting the tank again, that is when I discovered the gas flowed out of the smaller of the two breather rubber tubes. Thankfully I had moved the tubes so they drained onto the ground and not onto the bike. Does anyone know why this is happening.? I rode the bike 10 miles, everything was OK, then went home, no further issues. I'm concerned this can happen everytime I fill it up???? Any one know what is happening before I rip everything apart again.

One is a breather, one an overflow. The tank when very full, overflows into them when you lift it . Quite common. Some tanks can crack the weld at the hinge when a full tank is lifted, so try to avoid that or support the tank. Maybe your cap needs a new rubber seal. Do you leave an air gap when you fill the tank?

yours is a 2001 900ie?  it will have an insert that carries the fuel cap.  there are two rubber hoses inside the tank going from the insert to the steel lines that go out the bottom.  i'd say one of these rubber hoses has failed somehow.

Good point. Carbed 750 or IE 900? I was thinking it was a 750 for some reason. Not sure what was mean't by Corsa.

Yes, so how are these repaired?

Its not a tech challenging job, but a tedious (pita) job.  [thumbsup]
