Title: Monster 696 front brake rotors
Post by: seanster on July 10, 2014, 04:15:01 PM
Hi all,

I purchased a 696 last week. The previous owner left the bike in the garage for a year and previously lived near the beach (Galveston, TX) so lots of rust.

Other things I can clean and such, but the rotors aren't coming out the way I wanted. What's the best way to clean rusted brake rotors?

Another option: replace them. I have a spare pair (still in good condition) rotors from a SBK 748. My research said that I can use it. Can anyone confirm this information?

thanks!

Yes, you can use those

I did this for a custome who is "a bit tied up for money", I took rotors off, sprayed them with lots of WD40 or equivalent, used a brown brillo pad to scrub the rotors, then re-sprayed with the WD40 or equivalent; while doing this I "wacked" the buttons to "free the rust" inside and allow some play to be re-gained . . . After all this, a good "wash" with degreaser and then brake cleaner, after this I chased the wheels threads with the M8 cutting tool and re-installed rotors, new fluid and new pads beading  . . .

Or, take these off and install the 748 ones . . . about 30 mins vs 120mins

Just ride the piss out of it and the rotors should take care of themselves.....

Haha thanks!

So the brake feels a little stutter when I applied. I have read that it's due to the "nuts" of the floating rotors freeze up. Is that correct?

I'm fine with the correct rotors but I may switch to the 748 and then clean the OEM on the side when I have time.
