I have three M900's and one 900 SS, because they share a common engine I also have a spare motor. The spare engine came from a 96' SS with 10,000 Km's and is currently in my 93' M900 while I refresh it's engine. The plan is to rotate the spare engine on to each of the other bikes while I rebuild and refresh their corresponding engine.
The current plan is to replace all cylinder studs with the APE Chromoly cylinder studs as I hear the original studs are prone to snapping.
Replace the pistons and rings with either the JE or Wiseco 92mm.
What else do I need to look for? What else should I replace?
Should I also get the cylinder heads re-plated?
All comments, suggestions and advise welcome. Cheers in advance [thumbsup]
Do you mean replate the barrels or repaint the heads? I would have the valves and seats recut or at least lapped with new valve guide seals. Maybe valve guides or K liners depending on who is available to help out. My porting guy also did a good valve job and recut the seats due to the motor sitting for years. Maybe some porting?

Yea, I mean re-plate the barrels.
The heads I intend to take to my local Ducati man to work on the head and valves as this is beyond my abilities.
What shape do the barrels look in? Any score marks? The nickasil lining lasts a long time if unmolested by an engine problem that scores it. There are guys who have done over 100,000 miles on their Monsters. Maybe take them to your mechanic for a look.

Cheers, great advise. Nikasil plating isn't cheap but I'm wondering if it's worth doing while the barrels are off! I have heard of a Monster in the UK that has clocked over 300,000 miles without any major engine work.
Check out the studs at forum sponsor California Cycleworks. They have both the JE pistons and studs. I would get their stud nuts while I was at it, for the price fresh shiny nuts finish the job nicely.

Nikasil can last many hundred thousand miles. If the cylinders look and measure good leave good alone. This is an example of "If it ain't broke don't fix it".
