Title: charging system 04 s4r
Post by: George S on July 28, 2014, 10:34:11 AM
I believe my stator has failed and needs to be replaced. About a month ago, and after frequent riding (no periods of downtime), it failed to start. It was as if the battery was too weak. I had the battery load tested, and it checked out. With the help of a friend, we checked the output (don't remember if it was volts or amps. sorry, I know that sounds lame) from the regulator going to the stator, and there was no change. The output remained the same from idle up to 6000 rpm.

My understanding is that the regulator and stator must be replaced simultaneously. Ricks seems to be a reputable brand. When purchasing these two components, is it sufficient that they are made by the same manufacturer, or is there a more specific pairing, e.g. do they need matching serial numbers or something like that?

Thanks for the help!

IMO there is no need to replace either of those items if it hasn't failed. There is a strong possibility the OEM regulator will fail eventually so there might be some wisdom in replacing it if the stator is bad. Otherwise...if it ain't broke...

There is also no matched set I'm aware of, and I doubt OE parts are even made by the same company. It's just made to Ducati's specification.

Rick's is indeed a good brand. I've had one of their regulators on my bike for about 10 years.

Um, wow!  Whomever gave you that advice has no problem spending your money unnecessarily.  Stators can be tested and can outlive the motorcycle they live in.Disconnect the connector from the stator to the regulator.  Run the engine at a speed of 2K RPM.  With an AC voltmeter measure across all three wires, two at a time.  If you read 28-33 volts all is good.  While you are there check the condition of that connector.  If bad, replace with one of better quality or eliminate.  You must also replace any burnt wire.  If good, clean and pack with dielectric grease.  Often that connector is the cause of your problem and a contributor, if not spotted, to component failure.  Reassemble and retest.  You want to see 13.5 - 14.5 volts at 3K RPM.

This^^^  I was trying to find my old instructions and he beat me to it.  My stator tanked a few years ago and diagnosed with Howie's method.  The replacement is pretty easy (if you're a DIY kinda rider) and I can't emphasize dielectric grease enough.  Make it neat, but be sure to slather it on pretty good.  Your regulator will be fine.

Not positive, but I think mine is either Ricks or Electrosport.  Either way, you're going to get a good part.

Sounds good, everyone. Yeah I'll recheck the wires coming out of the stator and make sure, but as I recall it wasn't even 13v. could be a bad connection or corrosion. I'll apply the dielectric grease. I'll tackle that whole project after I replace my rear hub and sprocket.

And just for y'alls information: it was the dealership that suggested the two parts be replaced at the same time. IDK... maybe they were hoping i'd take that and run with it being that they gave me the option of Ricks parts which are about 1/2 the price of Ducati parts.

so just to be sure...
I first start the bike, then disconnect the stator from the regulator, then check the connections? or will the bike start with those two already disconnected?

thanks

The bike will start, as long as the battery is charged, with the regulator/alternator disconnected.
