Title: 1098 axle/hub on a Monster 1100?
Post by: mickb on August 06, 2014, 03:00:13 AM
Hi,
ok, maybe a daft idea, but as I have a set of BST carbon wheels from a 1098, which won't fit my Monster, is this possible?
Cost / practicality may make it far more sensible to sell the wheels & look for the 'correct' size, but I got a great deal on them, so just looking at options.

If its possible, anyone any idea how much work, & how complex this may be?

cheers.

looking further, this would almost certainly need the SBK swingarm.....am I on the road to ruin on this, or would that entire swingarm/hub etc have any chance of fitting?

Not sure, but I don't think a SBK swingarm will fit your engine (without machining the cases).

Last it was discussed, I believe it was established that a SBK hub has a different diameter than a Monster hub. Maybe other differences too - such as brake caliper fitment, sprocket allignment ...

Sad thing, but you're probably better off selling the wheel(s) and starting over.

Hi,
thanks for the info. The hub shouldn't be an issue, as I'd (theorectically!) use the entire assembly from the SBK (ie swing-arm, hub, axle, etc), but obviously sprocket alignment, shock mount, etc could be an issue. I'd expect the show-stopper would be the engine-mount pivots.

Youre probably right, I'm almost certainly clutching at straws on this one  [roll]

It must be hard to let the wheels go, but the required mods will certainly be too much.

After the 998, Ducati went to a larger OD on the rear hubs for single-sided swingarms.  Therefore, the Hypermotard, S*R, Multistrada, Streetfighter, Diavel, M1200, 848, 1098, 1198 all have the same larger outer diameter.

On the larger HP bikes (1098, 1198 motor *& 1199?!?), they went with the larger bearings and larger diameter spindle.  So, you **SHOULD** be able to swap the hub, spindle etcetera and then swap the wheels.

This is my understanding and is subject to me being totally wrong.

thanks guys. I suppose (one) of the keys questions would be whether the hub fits in the swing-arm, as its clear an arm swap is not possible?

No it wont fit the swing arm . . . Was checking and cross checking fitment for hubs/spindles and unless you swap the complete swingarm of a 848/1098 you wont be able to use those wheels . . .

Thanks The Last, presumably this means the hubs between the 848 & 1098 must be different also, as the 848 uses the same (ie smaller) axle as the M1100?

Believe it or not, is the same hub, different spindle . . .

I must leave the office for a few hours, I'll be back and will post the image with inter-compatibility chart . ..

Deal?

Ok, another thought. Assuming existing axle, etc was left in place, would it be possible to have a spacer machined which would slip between axle & wheel-hub, or would this bring other issues?

many thanks for the diagrams. I'm still hopeful someone could advise on whether a modified conical spacer could be machined assuming the left-hand side of the wheel-hub fits correctly.
