Title: Can I disconnect speedo without issue? 2013 M1100
Post by: Skybarney on August 28, 2014, 01:36:59 PM
title says it all.  I want to completely disconnect the headlight and the speedo from the bike right at the cable disconnects.  For some reason I remember someone saying that disconnecting it would result in some kind of starting issue and I wanted to check.

Any thoughts?

Not sure about yours...

but I seem to remember some models that wouldn't run w/out the headlight.

We came across it at the track.

20 pin connector. Ergo 20 chances for grief or at least a few WTFs.

Edit:  Made sense that if the battery can be removed so can the cluster.  I am doing the repaint the front bezel to change the color to black via Plasti-Dip thing.  It also needed a serious cleaning back there  :-\

I think tomorrow she gets a new Shorai battery anyway.

Original question wasn't clear.

Permanent removal, and why would anyone even contemplate that, would be a no start.

Obviously, temporary removal would not effect subsequent restarts.

I know there are several touting the Plasti-Dip process. I bought into it and tried it and it was a fail. The coating is soft, susceptible to scratches/delamination at edges, and easily softens when exposed to some cleaning products. I removed the Plasti-Dip and used rattle can semi-gloss. Personally, I think everybody should leave theirs original so that only a few of us have ours painted to match the bike.  ;D

I have been able to start some 696/796 at the shop when I removed the headlight to replace the HL bracket in one and the other had just a piece of the HL hanging from the connector and dash was shred . . . dunno if it still was "emitting" to the immo some sort of code . . . I only disconnected the remains of the HL and bike would start . . .

I will see how the Plasti-Dip hold up and looks when finished.  Not sold on it yet.  It is out drying in the garage right now.  Had to install some new Spyder grips while I was at it.

Should get it all back together tomorrow as I plan to ride a fair bit this weekend.

You need to disconnect the instrument cluster to get the headlight off.  Doing so will reset your clock and the trip meter but has no other detrimental effects, assuming you put it back on properly.  I've done mine plenty of times, when installing new indicators.
