Hello people,
I have a Ducati Monster S4 from 2002 and has a problem...when i try to start the bike it starts but it runs in only one piston (the one that is vertical). The other one is not working at all, of course it sounds nasty. i checked the spark plugs, they run normal, compresion is good for the cylinder that is not working.i changed the spark plugs but still won't work. Today i removed the air filter and the airbox and i noticed that on the first hole (i don't know how its called) where its supposed to suck air into the engine it is spiting petrol and smoke on my air filter. I checked the other hole from the 2nd piston and it is sucking air.
i have no idea what can be the problem, a mechanic from where i work said that its possible the exhaust is jammed somehow and the engine can't evacuate and that is why it spits the petrol and the smoke through the air admision hole...
if i remove the spark plug from the cylinder that is not working the bike starts almost instantly but of course it runs in only one cylinder. When i reconect the spark plug it starts but very hard and still only one cylinder is working.
i want to say that thursday morning i went to work and it started and worked normally. in the evening when i wanted to go back home it didn't start. I didn't hear any strange noises or something wrong with the bike when i went to work. i have to say that thursday it rained a bit on the bike but only from left side, and it's not like it was the first time in rain...in belgium rains a lot so...she is used with shity weather.
Thank you for any suggestions. cheers :)
excuse my spelling mistakes.
One injector or the wires/connectors to it wet/broken?
If it's not a wiring problem , maybe you can try to take out the injectors and switch them around - if the problem moves to the other intake you have your answer.
First idea was problems with the valves or piston rings, but since I'm not an expert I wouldn't know how to look/listen for that.
Good luck and keep us updated [thumbsup]
i don't know if it's the injector because it is spitting petrol, so the injection is good. the piston is moving forward and backward, spark plug gives a good spark but it doesn't start, and it is spiting out the petrol and the exhaust smoke through the air intake hole...The wires are ok, they are not wet, i put some contact spray on, but still nothing. Also i switched the injectors between them, but still no result. I just took it to a service and i hope it will be ok. Thank you for your answer, i will keep you informed.
Have a nice weekend. Cheers [drink]
i had a shop ring me recently with this sort of issue, and they found that if they crimped the fuel return hose to the tank from the pressure regulator it was fine, indicating a fuel pressure issue.
often a 5.9m ecu bike running on one is the ecu. that was pretty common. but if you have spark then that mustn't be the issue.

I've just gotten a 620 Sport in that was only running on the vertical, and poorly at that.
TPS was reading 0.2deg at closed and 25deg at wide open throttle.
A wee bit out of spec. :P
backfiring out the intake , check the timing , ignition and cam timing
