Title: Help me pick out a headlight
Post by: Dragsterhund on September 03, 2014, 09:16:11 PM
I'm kind of over the two angel eye lights I'm running on my monster, and I like the CorseDynamics lights, but I'm having trouble choosing between the 5 3/4 inch headlight or the 7 inch headlight.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these two options? Photos?

I got their 7" light with the kit for mounting it on the lower triple and promptly returned the light after seeing it on the bike. It looked awful to me, like an old Harley or Indian headlight. I hated it IRL even tho it looked good in photos. The other thing that bothered me about that deal was, it's simply a 7" "Drag Specialties" headlight you can buy anywhere for $40-$50 bucks so that kit is outrageously over priced imo.

The mounting bracket is a really good idea tho and I'm glad I kept it. Before I ended up going with an LED Truck-Lite I ordered a "Harddrive" grooved 7" bottom mounted. Like this:

Looked 1000x better than the Drag Specialties imo. Has a shallower profile, the DS/"Corse Dynamics" one is way deeper, just a fat ugly ass Harley light.

But this is the route I ended up going, LED round light with the adapter ring to fit the stock bucket: (then found a carbon bucket because the Truck-Lite is ridiculously heavy.

I like how the Truck-Lite in the OE size bucket pulls off a fusion of old school and modern looks and modern technology. And it's bright as hell.

P.s despite my complaint about the "Corse Dynamics" headlight shenanigans, Motowheels was very cool about giving me a generous partial refund and selling me the bracket only.

Buck... Can you link where you picked up the LED Truck Lite? I have the Moto adapter ring... just waiting to find the right lamp.

Truck-Lite Phase 7 #27270c, eBay or Amazon take your pick...don't pay more than $168.

This is what Motowheels refers to as the; "Corse Dynamics custom LED headlight" and charges $299 for... $500 if you want their cheesy bucket.  [roll]

had a customer with this light. it blew 9 bulbs in a year. all wiring was solid and intact, all hardware/brackets were fine. we even tried to use some rubber to absorb vibrations.  no dice, still blows bulbs. The only thing we can attribute it to is heavy vibration. It is mounted on an S4RS.

That's too bad. Did it look good at least? Lol

Buck, how did you mount the light to the bike? What do the ears bolt to? I got rid of the U-bracket and other stuff.

I use the U bracket. I honestly dunno why so many ppl hate it, it does a great job absorbing shock and imo looks way cleaner than fork mounted brackets cluttering things up.

The lower triple mount bracket from Motowheels is probably your best bet but that would limit your headlight choices to bottom mount options that have already been duscussed...the ugly ass expensive Hardley knock off or the one that blows 9 bulbs a year. :/

I powder coated my U bracket and ears and I think it looks great...

I need to work out a way to hold you to ransom Buck, for everything in that photo!

More realistically need to find a good powder oater over here, and sell my body until I can afford some IMA.

The truck lite is a lot brighter than stock? I've always been a bit disappointed with stock output, but then again I wanna turn Night into day when it's just me in the sticks at night..

The stock light is notoriously pathetic, you're not alone. Upgrading to a PIAA Ultra White or Silverstar makes a significant difference. The Silverstar is a much better value between the 2. My Truck Lite lights up the night it is awesome, but the heat sink makes it HEAVY.

For your bike I would just have the stock triples coated, I think they look excellent like that. I almost decided to use my OE lower triple so I could use my Cycle Cat upper...I still wish I had sometimes. Check out Monsta's build thread, he retained his OE triples and they look great powder coated. The IMA's are hands down the best deal in aftermarket triples for our older narrow stem Monsters but they change the offset, which may or may not be a good thing for you. I had to raise the rear to get the geometry right and it's still going to take some tuning with all my other suspension mods and upgrades.

Daaamn....you're making me regret not doing something wilder like this for my rat bike build. For that bike I went with this:

There is IMO only one solution for aftermarket lights.

Clearwater LED  Glenda or Erica models.  Glenda you could run a single 6000 lumen light.  Erica model is twin 2400 Lumen lights.  Everything else is just pale in comparison, literally.
