Title: UPDATE - Parts needed - I heard the song of the sausage creature...
Post by: Ideapimp on July 11, 2008, 10:28:28 PM
Parts List -
If you've got any of the following, I'd be interested in buying them off of you. Or you may donate to the Ryan Romero fund, of course. Not all are "necessary" but all will help to return the bike to her former glory.

All are for a '06 Sport 1000
- Right Foot Peg
- Stock Front Brake Lever
- Right Front Blinker (though I think all four are the same)
- Stock Right Bar-end Mirror
- Clutch Cover (open preferred, stock chrome works too)
- Right Clip-on handlebar mount ("the tree" so to speak that attaches to the fork and holds the bar)
- Termi 2 - 1 Muffler (just the rear-most muffler section, the rest is fine)

Original Post -
…and it was a cacophonous symphony of wind, exhaust and fear. The sound was deafening. and then it was gone. For the Sausage Creature's mouth was quickly occupied with a huge section of my ass.

In all seriousness, I'm now to be counted among the initiated. I low-sided the bike tonight. First and foremost, the bike only has minor damage. Thanks for asking. I am ok as well.

Will in the lead, me in second, we came around an unfamiliar on ramp to 30. William took it at a good clip, but nothing alarming. I followed. The first part of the curve was fine, then the radius dropped down on us. I felt it coming and wrenched my head to the right, leaned into it, opened up the throttle a bit and locked my gaze on Will's arse (insert gay joke here). I almost pulled it off….almost.

Seems I nicked the outside curb and the bike got out from under me. To my credit Rich and Bryant said it was a textbook lay down. The bike slide out from under me and when I hit I tucked my limbs in and rolled.

As for the bike the exhaust took the brunt. Some minor damage on the mirror, brake pedal, clutch cover, right turn signal, a couple scratches on the tank. Most all of them cosmetic. Bryant and Rich offered to bring the stands by tomorrow and we'll give it a good once over, but the skunk is tough ole broad. She's gonna pull through just fine.

Me, well my shiny white jacket looks pretty cool now. Less shiny. It took a big scrape on the right top shoulder. I skinned a couple of places on the knees, and my left shoulder blade hit the curb pretty hard before I popped up. The helmet's shot. Some good scrapes on there, probably a thud or two of the ole melon against the concrete. I really don't remember much of that, but damn my left shoulder hurts.

All I could think of during the fall was. “F*ck! My poor bike!” I knew I was gonna be fine, but I was worried about her. Seems she came through miraculously well at first glance. I'm sure tomorrow there will be a couple of pictures and maybe a parts list if anyone's looking to sell me some helpful odds and ends.

Lessons Learned:

Will is a better rider than I am.
Respect the unfamiliar curve, for it will hurt you if you don't.
Full-faced helmets for me, ALWAYS.

Damn, Ryan, really sorry to hear about the crash but I am glad to hear that you were able to walk away and post this. At the end of the day, that is MOST important.

Dude, you don't know how glad I am that you're ok. My heart sank into my stomach when I left that corner and didn't see headlights behind me anymore. It sucks now, but the best part of this whole scenario is that you have your first and only wreck out of the way. The best lesson I learned from my wreck in the Hill Country was to not follow anyone into a corner but to plan my own strategy.

Again, I'm glad you're ok.

Wow.
GLAD you were wearing a helmet! (and the rest of the gear too).

That sucks... but you are writing about it... so it could be worse.

Keep us posted on you and your bikes progress!

Man that was the worst feeling coming into that turn and see you and your bike down... So glad that you did'nt get hurt too bad. You know what they say... any crash that you can ride away from  ;D ok, so thats not what they say but just good to know your still in one piece.

dude...that was a serious sparks show!!!   ;D  seriously, though, both you and the bike look no worse for the wear...i'm getting ready right now, and i'll strap my spare helmet to the bike and swing by your place en route to look at a townhouse.  and fwiw, that corner really was a sneaky one; i had never been on it before either, and i was still keeping kind of a "staggered" position on the inside of the corner, and did not scrub off enough speed before the corner.  i started to see you drift wider and wider...and then the sparks, and then i just looked away and focused on not running you over, because that wouldn't be cool.

anyway, man, my stands are at your service...just need to get bryant or someone to come over this way to transport them to your place, and i'm more than happy to help out with any bending/unbending or wrenching services.

very glad you're okay dude  [thumbsup]  [moto]

Sorry about the crash. Glad to hear that you are OK... and the bike. Just glad some drunk turd in a car wasn't right behind you to run you and the bike over for good measure. That's one of my concerns riding in traffic in this town. Got to give unknown roads/turns plenty of respect, especially at night... lack of daylight can really change your preception. File everything you "learned" on the hard drive. It makes you wonder why all those dumbasses ride without helmets, jackets and gloves. Saw a moron heading south on Greenville the other day with no gear and no shirt looking cool on his cruiser. All I could think about was the cool red gooey streak he would leave on the pavement. :P

Again, seriously glad your OK. Bikes can be fixed, sometimes people can't. Be careful out there. [thumbsup] [moto]

Ryan, due to the Back in Black's transformation I have some of the stock goodies you need. Just a few. Stock handlebars, stock bar end mirrors and  stock clutch cover. Can't help you with the Termi, blinkers, foot peg or brake lever. Have my stock mufflers but who the hell would want those? Better to have a bent Termi 2 into 1 than stockers. [thumbsup] Let me know.

Damn Ryan, that is some crap news  :-X  But I am glad to hear you are as well as you are and I sure hope you get your bike back up and on the road soon.  Very cool you had your gear on - I've been SOOO tempted to ride in the summer with a really minimal list of "must-do" protective gear... Actually thought about riding to lunch the other day without a jacket... WTH!

Hope you're back to 100% soon  ;)

Not even bothering with insurance. Deductible is $500 and it looks like about a grand will have her near to perfect. That's WITH spending close to $500 for the new Termi muffler. Rich D was gong to help me out with a hammer and some welding on the old one, but once he saw the pics he deduced it was toast. I don't blame him. Looks like more trouble than it's worth.

Well, to replace the helmet and back protector it'll run a bit more than a grand, but as Bryant kept telling me, "that's cheap insurance."

Besides, I'm sure they'd screw me for more than that extra money above and beyond the deductible with a rate increase if I claimed it.

Good thinking Ryan. Sometimes it's just best to keep the accident repairs "in house". Especially when it's minor cosmetic stuff like this. Insurance companies can get excited about motorcycle accident damage. Helmets, jackets, boots and gloves are expendable. They are like gas and tires. They do their job, get used up and get replaced. Can't get sentimental about gear. It's like a bus, another one will come along in ten minutes.

All I can say is that I totally feel your pain, seeing as how I totalled a Monster within the first month of having it  [bang].  I was not happy, for sure.  Glad that you are perfectly fine, though, and that your bike is going to make it through ok.  Don't know if this was your first crash or not, but if it was, welcome to the club.  I can guarantee that it will not be your last.  [thumbsup]  Better that YOU are ok than your bike though.  Bikes, while they might have their own "personalities" after being customized here and there, are replaceable.  You are not.

Ryan,

Scary stuff, but I'm glad to hear that you are okay.  I checked your list of parts needed against my small inventory of spare parts for my SC.  Unfortunately, I don't have anything on the list.  :-\

I'm looking forward to seeing the changes in appearance associated with replacing the damaged parts.  There just aren't enough modded SC's out there these days.  (maybe I should do something about that, huh?  [laugh])

I think it's possible...

Like McKraut said: All it takes is beer (and some Argon, and a few Amperes of current...)

I already mentioned I've seen them bobbed back...
But Ryan is anticipating the next crash and is wanting to keep the full size "frame slider".   [thumbsup]

Ryan,

You ever figure anything out on the handlebar thing? Did you ask Tommy if those were stock bars on his bike when you bought it? My Back in Black was stone stock except for the custom AMS BiB paint job and Termis. All the work done to it was from that point forward. It definitely had the original stock factory bars. I had AMS change them to the factory "comfort" bars that are about four inches taller than stock. The set I left you are the stock Sports 1000 factory bars... at least the ones that came on my bike. Both scooters are '06 SC1Ks so I would think they would be the same. Obviously they are not, I believe you. I'm 100% sure about mine, so I guess that leaves the bars on your bike as it came from Tommy as the X factor. Let me know what you find out. Puzzling evidence. ???

I think the ones on the injured SC are the comfort ones.  The ones that I remember on BarneePhife's were the low agressive clip ons that are stock

Post by: fastwin on July 15, 2008, 09:31:49 AM
I thought Jim had the taller "comfort" bars too?? Not sure. That could be the answer though. Mine are for sure the stocker low bars, couldn't use them, too low for the bionic neck to handle. Tommy (or who ever he got the bike from) may have installed the taller bars on Ryan's bike. Need to campare his damaged bars with a set of "comfort" bars. I can tell by looking.

Post by: fastwin on July 15, 2008, 09:41:29 AM
BINGO!! Being the dumbass that I am I didn't think to look at an online picture of the "comfort" bars. :P Just clicked on the AMS website and went to Sport Classic parts and shazaam... there are the taller bars! Click on the picture Ryan and tell me if those don't look just like your damaged ones. They are $125 which in the grand world of Ducati parts isn't that expensive. Surprised they aren't $250!! You are still welcome to my low, stock bars but trust me, the taller ones are a lot more comfy. Go sit on a stocker at D/AMS and see what you think. [thumbsup]

Post by: pipeliner1978 on July 15, 2008, 09:41:58 AM
I think AMS must have intalled the comfort ones on my old skunk, especially if they were taller than other ppl's "stock" ones.  I never knew they were comfort risers, but they weren't uncomfortable.

Tommy, trust me, you would know if you had the "uncomfortable" ones. If you didn't notice anything, then you for sure had the taller ones... lucky for you! [thumbsup] My BiB is in my storage bldg. so I couldn't just walk out in the garage and see what Ryan was talking about. It now all makes sense.

Just stopped by the Ducati shop up here in Seattle for fun. Talked with the sales guy there. Turns out, towards the end of the 06 model year they started putting the comfort set on the bikes as a sales incentive to move them more easily. So he said that chances were I had the comfort set. When he pointed at the bike he had on the sales floor and said, "Like those." I knew he was right.

oh well, I wanna TRY the stock set and see what I think. Who knows. Maybe they'll be fun.
