Title: S4 immobilizer problem???
Post by: ducatibokes4 on September 06, 2014, 08:26:56 AM
I think I have an immobilizer problem with my S4.  [bang]

After i cleaned it and and blow dried it he started fine.
Because i have an open clutch cover i let it run for a couple of minutes and drove him in the garage.
Next morning he won't run,he cranks and fires but thats al.
When i turn the ignition the gauges stay in position an don't turn but you hear the full pump.
The key light in the rev gauge blinks 3x and then stays on.

Im pretty sure its the immobilizer but how do i get rid of it or rewire or bypass...

I only have the red key and no blacks.

Thanks for any help

The wiring and Immobilizer configuration are unique to that year.

Unplug the connector on the instruments cluster and make sure that's completely dry.

Did that twice, the antenna is glued in position.

The bike is going to the dealer later this week :(

Ping SOS Diagnostics. They can make you black keys and/or disable your immobilizer.

There's a good chance you got water in the gauges.  The fact that it was working fine and then stopped sounds like water got in and had to pool up for a bit, then broke stuff.

If that's true the longer it sits the more it will corrode.  The dealer won't open it up to look it, they'll just try to sell you a new one for $800.

I would open it up and take a look ASAP.  Dry it thoroughly and clean any corrosion you see with a toothbrush and some rubbing alcohol (the higher the alcohol content the better, I used Everclear 95%).  There is a guide on how to do this on the forum somewhere, let me know if you can't find it and I'll look for it.

The most common place for the water to pool is right under the immobilizer LED where all the connectors to the cable are pinned.

A good way to make sure it's dry before reassembly is to position an incandescent light bulb over the parts. It will generate enough heat to drive off any residual moisture without being hot enough to damage anything. I knew a German watch maker who did this when assembling timepieces.

'01 S4 are different from subsequent years of Immobilizer equipped Monsters.
There is no circuitry to speak of inside the gauges, they're very much the same as '00 and '01 M900.

Brad is on the right track, also check the plug between the antenna and the harness.

Check the plug at the immobilizer unit, it's mounted to the top front of the airbox.
